After congratulating the Cardinals, two more comments about the game.

    (1) I really HATE it when officials get calls wrong in big games which would have impacted the outcome. There were three wrong calls, the kick being out of bounds call toward the end of the first half where the Cardinals should have gotten the ball, a blatant pass interference call toward the end of the first half (and holding, the player was holding the receiver’s shirt) [which Troy Aikman HORRIBLY said was a good official’s call] which would have given the Eagles a key first down, and the fourth down call at the very end of the game when a pass interference call was the right call (there was clear contact before the ball got there and the defender was playing the man NOT the ball). The last call was very major in that the Eagles would have kept the ball and had first down and a chance to win the game.

    (2) The Eagles offense beat themselves. The number of dropped passes and misthrown balls in both halves was simply too high for a team to get to the Super Bowl.

Some of us here in St. Louis are more than a little conflicted. While we still revere Kurt Warner, the idea that Bill Bidwill, one of the most reprehensibly inept and indifferent owners in all of professional sports, has a shot at professional sport’s greatest prize is extremely hard to take.

  3. TomRightmyer says:

I agree entirely with Kendall’s observations and would add several other pass interference calls that should have been made.

This is the 40th anniversary of the game that marked the end of Western Civilization when Joe Namath and the AFC Jets beat Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. Lucy and I were in the Virgin Islands; the Diocese of Maryland raised the minimum salary by enough that year for us to get a budget flight and hotel room on the back side of St. Thomas.

{Sigh} I have to admire the Cardinals, but I really, REALLY wanted a Keystone Bowl.

Christopher J – not to worry, they’re playing the Steelers. In my opinion that wipes out Bidwill’s chance entirely. 😉

  5. Christopher Johnson says:

I hope so, MJD_NV. I’d really like Kurt to get another ring(you have to have grown up watching the St. Louis football Cardinals to understand why the 2000 Super Bowl still hasn’t sunk in for some of us and why Kurt’s going to be in our family for the rest of his life) but I wish there was some way Bidwill could be deprived of one.

I agree with Christopher. Having been raised near St. Louis and attended many Cardinal games, baseball and football, I really decided not to root for the football Cardinals after they were bought and moved to Phoenix TAKING the Cardinal name with them. I and many others thought that if the team were moved, the name should have been left for a new St. Louis team!

So it’s difficult for me to root for them now.

  7. montanan says:

Didn’t the Cardinals bring that name to St. Louis from Chicago – or did they have a different name there?

  8. Christopher Johnson says:

They’ve always been the Cardinals. And if I remember my history correctly, the football team was the Cardinals before the baseball team was. I don’t resent the fact that Bidwill moved the team. Back then, I thought that no NFL football team at all was better than the Cardinals(still can’t figure out why the CFL didn’t put a team here when they tried to expand south). I just resent the fact that Bidwill didn’t try as hard when the team played here as he seems to be trying now.

Here in AZ we are thrilled that our Cardinals are going to the Super Bowl. Go Cardinals!
