Bishop: Prayers Needed Amid Honduras Turmoil

The Bishop of Honduras has written to the House of Bishops, asking their prayers for his country after Sunday’s ouster of President Mel Zelaya.

“So far, the entire clergy, lay leadership and our families are all well,” the Rt. Rev. Lloyd Allen wrote on June 29 in an e-mail to the House of Bishops.

A mission group from my church returned from Honduras on Saturday, June 20. We had heard rumors of impending action against the president throughout the week. We also had the privilege of seeing Bp. Allen much of the week. He repeatedly asked that we pray for the people of Honduras and for the church in Honduras. He is an amazing man – truly a shepherd of his flock.

We continue to receive reports from friends still in Honduras that are much at odds from what we see reported in the media.

The Hondurans I have met (during my one week there each summer for the past eight years) have such faith and joy. I pray that the U.S. and E.U. will not punish the people of Honduras by withholding aid. I pray that I will be able to share la paz del Señor with my Honduran friends again next summer.
