Iranian cleric says British Embassy employees will be tried

A senior Iranian cleric said today that several employees of the British Embassy in Tehran arrested in recent days would be put on trial for unspecified charges of acting against Iran’s national security, potentially escalating a confrontation with the West over last month’s disputed presidential election.

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, head of the conservative Guardian Council, said in a Friday prayer sermon that the employees, all of them Iranian nationals, “will definitely be tried” for taking part or promoting weeks of unrest surrounding the June 12 election, which was marred by opposition allegations of massive vote-rigging.

This is a complete outrage, bordering on an act of war. A blockade of all Iranian shipping would not be too harsh a response.

Obama and Hillery should give them a good talking to.

Sorry, The Won is busy lecturing Hondurans on the virtues of having a Chavista Presidente for life.

Very difficult – The old guard are trying to rekindle the embers of the revolution to consolidate their power and would like nothing better than a reaction from Britain to help them – Britain has a lot of baggage in Persia.

There seems to be a power struggle going on and the best thing for us to do may be to keep the temperature as low as possible firstly for the people imprisoned but not to make things any more difficult for those trying to fight for democracy. The EU is taking action and is making it clear that they will not allow Iran to divide them.

  5. Tired of Hypocrisy says:

A trial? You mean they’re not going to blow them up in the streets like so many other innocent victims of their state-sponsored terrorism?

  6. tgs says:

Let’s hope the British handle it better than Jimmy Carter did.

Oh yes, we all know how afraid Iran was of Bush and the Republicans.

Bush proceeded on Iran in exactly the way the Beautiful People said we should have proceeded on Iraq, i.e. with diplomacy. He even let the BP’s objects of adoration, the Europeans, take the lead in those talks. The result: An apocalyptic, Jew-hating regime bent on acquring nuclear arms is years closer to achieving that goal while simultaneously brutalizing its people and trampling any tiny semblance of liberal democracy. Well done, EUnuchs!!

And now, The Won is going to express his displeasure by blocking sanctions against the theocracy.
