Episcopal Church leaders in Los Angeles today nominated an openly gay priest and an openly lesbian priest as bishops, becoming one of the first dioceses in the national church to test a controversial new policy that lifted a de facto ban on gays and lesbians in the ordained hierarchy.
The nominations of the Rev. John L. Kirkley of San Francisco and the Rev. Canon Mary Douglas Glasspool of a Baltimore-based diocese are likely to further inflame theological conservatives in the U.S. church and their global partners in the Anglican Communion, who have repeatedly warned about the repercussions of such action.
The two are among six nominees who will face election for two assistant bishop posts at the diocese’s annual December convention in Riverside.

Well, they seem to have no doubt as to what GC 2009 did.
So is the moratorium over according to TEC or is it still not really repealed yet?
Elves,
The link isn’t working for me. You might check it out.
FWIW, I think Mary Glasspool+ is a very formidable candidate. And as I assume that the way the election in December will work is that the two top votegetters will be elected, I think there’s an excellent chance that Glasspool will be elected (since even coming in second would be good enough).
Quite a momentous weekend. Three openly immoral candidates are put forth without any shame in two ultra-liberal, gay-friendly dioceses (MN and LA).
And of course, it’s obvious that these three candidates had to have been under serious consideration and being checked out before Gen Con even started in Anaheim last month, much less before the passage of D025. The implications are clear regarding the import of B033 from 2006: B033 only amounted to a pretend ban on gay bishops, not a “de facto” one. These nominations, like the several previous ones over the last three years since the Columbus Gen Con, help show that B033 always was a farce. There never was any real “restraint,” much less actual repentance.
And of course, nothing less than actual repentance and wholehearted embracing of the truth of Lambeth 1998’s Resolution 1.10 will do. So, the slow train wreck of the AC just sped up.
TEC’s deluded leaders who vainly imagine themselves to be so prophetic aren’t just choosing to “walk apart,” they are RUNNING away, as fast as they can. It’s all terribly sad, even horribly tragic. But clarity is always good. And I for one welcome it. The New Reformation just got another boost, as the need for it has become clearer than ever.

Thanks, Elves.
Now if you could just put in a good word to Santa…

Of course, until the Rev. Canon Mary Douglass Glasspool or the Rev. John Kirkley is elected, neither is a bishop.
During its election of bishop, the Diocese of California choose from a list of seven that included two openly gay men and a Lesbian. The top three candidates—by votes—were straight. My personal preference was a straight woman (who lost) … but my preference had zip to do with her sexuality.
I cannot speak for Ms. Glasspool … but Mr. Kirkley (who, if I’m not mistaken, was put forward to the priesthood by my parish) is a fine priest who will make a good bishop … if not as a result of this election … surely via another. I don’t doubt for one moment that John’s call is anything but genuine. Moreover, at his side is an upstanding man who is a truly outstanding parent as well as a credit to his family and the broader church community.
What I find sad about this election are the enquiring minds who want to know all the juicy tidbits. The only matter of interest seems to be the sexuality of Mr. Kirkley and Ms. Glasspool. That being so, two lifetimes of dedication to the Church are ignored while focus is given to a small facet of each of these two candidate’s being. Of course, that facet is — or rather should be — irrelevant to this election.
#6 FFV, have you read the Rev. Kirkley’s reflections on the “love triangle” consisting of David, Jonathan, and Saul, with a few speculations thrown in about the sexual interests of the YHWH himself? This is disturbing to me. Read it, and see if you think it’s all right. It’s quoted in full, not excerpted.
