Taking a break from the lightning and rain for a couple of hours. Surprised we have Internet access, even though we are getting off very, very lightly because we are out of the wind cone. As I look out my windows, I can see the edge of the storm from one horizon to the next. It is huge.
People need to pray for Jamaica and the Caymans. The islands of St Lucia, Martinique and Dominca got pounded hard, but there was not a lot of loss of life. Reports are on the news here that not many trees are standing on St. Lucia.
Jamaica and the Caymans will get a direct hit with a cat 4-5 tonight and tomorrow. As we know there are lot of people are in the way.
All of my friends from those places checked in with family yesterday and found their families are panic-stricken. I would not be surprised that a lot of churches are going to be overwhelmed with this on all of those islands. Even near the tourist areas, these are not places with lots of resources and wealth.
It looks like Houston dropped out of the long range zone of potential land fall. Right now we are getting more thunderstorms. The past two months it has just rained and rained.
Words Matter – thanks, got the oil changed and the tires checked on the SUV, have the dogs latests shot records, dog food, doggie downers for the car trip, important documents in the portable file folder – ready to go to Dallas if needed. I have the good fortune that my corporate head quarters is in Dallas, and since I am a corporate employee, I can head to Dallas and work from there. Since my wife is disabled, and our house is in a mandatory hurricane evacuation area, we get to leave first in the evaculation schedule.
For Rita, we left 4 hours early, so it only took us 8.5 hours for the normal 5 hours to Dallas. My in-laws would not listen and leave early, and they took 26 hours! This time they are getting ready early, if needed.
Dean looks like it could be absolutely catastrophic for Jamaica. May hit as a very strong Cat 4 or even Cat 5. Tonight I’m worried also about Haiti and the Dominican Republic as Dean seems to have moved a bit northward. If Dean goes north of Jamaica, it’s good for Jamaica as the storm’s north side is always the worst, but it would be catastrophic for Haiti. There doesn’t seem to be a good scenario at the moment, unless passing well south of Jamaica and then fizzling or hitting somewhere very sparsely populated…
Prayers ascending for all in its path in the Caribbean, and for those who may be in its path in Texas.

Doubtful that Houston will get hit but Brownsville, TX, may. That city has the lowest per capita income (and highest rate of poverty) in the country so the effects would be like Katrina’s. I’m making preparations and keeping in contact with a good friend in Brownsville so she and her daughter can come here if they need to leave. The mayor there has already called for voluntary evacuation.
