Nice. I don’t know if this kid also plays lacrosse, but lacrosse-style goals, which this is, are somewhat rare. This was a simulated penalty shot situation back in December 2007, but it is a delightful clip nevertheless. I can’t figure oot who’s the keep here, but probably a backup goaler for the Senators.
I played goal in Canadian league hockey for years, and the kid went stick-side against the guy. He had obviously practised the move a bunch. Glove-side you can get those things maybe a third of the time, but they’re even worse in a penalty shot situation. Fortunately — goaler’s perspective — they’re very rare.
Mike Legg pulled off a glove-side lacrosse-style goal in a real game situation back in 1996. Again, rare, but not unheard of. I’d like to see clips of this Gerlach kid in real game situations. If he resembles — even somewhat — the early Gretzky, he’ll be fairly high in the 2016 NHL draught. Otherwise … an interesting footnote. Mike Legg, BTW, bounced around in minor league hockey for about eight years before hanging up the skates.
Lacrosse moves are more common in Canada, where lacrosse — not hockey — is the national game and lots of guys have played lacrosse every spring.
