Roman Catholic Cardinal says Statement on Gays Was Misrepresented

The cardinal, however, said in a statement sent to ZENIT on Thursday that his words were taken out of context. The cardinal said he was referencing the Bible, specifically St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, 1:26-27, which says (in part), “Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity.”

“This is what the Word of God says, it isn’t what I said,” Cardinal Lozano Barragán affirmed. “Now, I have never said that a particular homosexual cannot be saved, because he can be saved.”

“Many times one is not a homosexual through one’s own fault; it all depends on one’s education and environment,” the prelate clarified.

    OK, so what he meant was that non-celibate “transsexuals and homosexuals will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

  2. the roman says:

    If non-celibate transexuals and homosexuals equate as unrepentant sinners than yes they join legions of others who bring judgement upon themselves for rejecting God’s will and invoking their own.

    What a helpful pastoral approach. That’ll really have gay men, their families and friends crowding back in to church. Another generation and the RC Church will be dead in Europe, on current trends, so isn’t it time someone thought of maybe trying to attract rather than repel potential members?

    And you think that even if the RCC dies in Europe (it won’t), your ilk will survive? Laughable.

    Protestantism -> Liberalism -> Atheism

    The Word of God says what It says, who are you to try to redefine what God has said in the Bible.

    3. Nice try, “Fr.” Mark.

    The survival of the Catholic Church will never depend on how many sexually active homosexuals are comfortable with its teachings. Its future will depend on its fidelity to Christ and that alone. As a member of a truly dying religious body, TEC, your comments on demographics are ironic to say the least.

    Good for the Cardinal. He has followed the proper principle: Especially when criticized, never miss an opportunity to restate with conviction the Truth of the Gospel.
