The college basketball world, and possibly even the President of the United States, was atuned to the new No. 1 team in the nation.
The story line got turned over, however, by No. 2: Devan Downey.
In an incredible performance, Downey led South Carolina to its first victory against a top-ranked team.
South Carolina stunned Kentucky 68-62 before a frenzied crowd and behind its diminutive star.
This made the top story on ESPN’s Sportscenter.
President Obama had called Kentucky during the day to thank them for their Haiti outreach. ESPN’s Neil Everett kiddingly noted the next time the President calls a basketball team, they may hang up on him.
It just goes to show you once again that on the basketball court in College, anything can happen–think Villanova against Georgetown in the 1985 NCAA final.
Think NC State against U of H/Phi Slamma Jamma in 1983. I’m still mad about that one.
It was an embarrassing display of bumbling by the Wildcats. Very tough for this UK grad to watch. Kudos to Downey who was quicker than greased lightning and deadly from the right corner and free throw line.
