USA Today Editorial: Lingering failures reignite Catholic child abuse scandal

The Catholic Church, again reeling from child sexual abuse scandals, has had more chances than most institutions to come clean, purge its problems and make amends.

Yet it has failed repeatedly to do so, leaving a scandal that might have been ended in the 1980s to fester for a quarter century. Priests who molested children and bishops who covered up the crimes ”” and, in doing so, enabled the abuse of more children ”” have betrayed victims and parishioners alike.

  1. Paula Loughlin says:

Never has it been more evident that the World hates the Church. And by default all Christians who dare to proclaim a moral truth.

The Church has done much to make amends for abuses that happened decades ago and has implemented strong policies to curb abuse and to prevent the coverups that are such a stain on the Church. And though there is much fault to be found in the past behavior of some bishops I say without hesitation the same can not be said of Pope Benedict XVI. He is innocent and it is his awakening to the depth of the problem that is bringing much needed light to the Church.

If the issue for the press truly was the horror of child sexual abuse they would be looking at the failings of all public institutions, both past and present. They would take a much closer look at victim, perpetrator profiles. They would see how other institutions are handling preventing and reporting abuse. They would even include how institutions distinguish between professional internal investigations and dealings with civil authorities. I imagine they would be knocked for a loop to discover such internal investigations often are shielded by rules of confidentiality. Yea gods that is “secret” in media talk.

But they are not interested in addressing the truth of the sexual abuse of children. They are interested in destroying the Church. And it is becoming very apparant that they are not above inventing , exaggerating and omitting facts in order to do so. This is the method they used to convince the world that climate change was dooming us to an empty void of a planet within 100 years. They are the worst kind of liars spurred on by their own zeal for a Utopia that elevates grossly immoral behavior above the commands of God.
