Oh my. As an England supporter, I’m very disappointed. It’s better than a loss, of course, but a loss wasn’t expected. Nor was England basically scoring their opponent’s only goal. Ouch!
Well it wasn’t exactly the soccer version of 1776 out there. More like the war of 1812. Which is to say it was a draw, and one that I think America should be very grateful for.
As one who played goal in Canadian league soccer for a few years, that’s as close to a keeper’s own-goal as I’ve ever seen. He’s gonna have a few tough days.
One of my first sports memories was watching England take down the pot in 1966. If we can’t win it, and we can’t, I hope England does since that’s who Americans are and where Americans came from. Vituperation ain’t happening, at least not from me.
Sorry, I don’t identify with the English; if the USA can’t win then my hopes are always with Germany (where a great deal of Americans came from btw). And the DFB-Auswahl are off to a good start, crushing the Australians today 4 – 0.

I was very glad that Steven Gerrard had a fine game as England’s captain; it has been anything but a good season for him.
Both offenses looked full of potential and both defenses pretty vulnerable. But is is early and there is a lot of football still to play.
An equitable solution in which we can both find encouragement, at least between ourselves. Well done.

I hope the English go easy on that poor goalie. We were lucky to get that point.
Looked a little like the Anglican Communion.
How boringly civil we are. Can’t anyone muster a healthy bit of vituperation for the other side?
I liked the headline in one of the NYC papers (I think it was the Post). It was something like “US wins, 1-1”
England kicked off at 19:39.
The USA showed up at 19:41 and declared victory.
