The utterly best film of the year – of many years – does not appear on the list. Folks if you get a chance to see the French film Des hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and men) do so. It is about the Trappist monks who were murdered in Algeria having chosen to stay out of friendship with the local Muslim people. It is deeply moving, and full of reflection on what it means to follow Christ. Although gentle in approach the narrative moves steadily and keeps you enthralled. Do not be put off by the fact that it is subtitled. And before you ask me, No, I do not know why the English title inverts the order of the French title.
Thanks, Terry. I will have to check that out if I can find it. Finding foreign films in the States is often a challenge because they are often consciously not marketed because Americans hate reading subtitles and the producers know they will lose money from the get go.
“Winter’s Bone” is disturbing but brilliant. I once lived in a place like that and was not unhappy to leave. Outsiders unwelcome and need not apply, and even the lifers vacillate between helping and abusing/torturing/killing each other–a sick, MPD environment. So sad and requires much prayer…
Is it un-American to not like the Toy Story movies?

#1, Archer–Yes. Where is “The King’s Speech”?
David —
He says in his first paragraph why he didn’t include “The King’s Speech.”
I plan to see “True Grit” tomorrow night.

#5–Whoops. I read the list, but skipped the opening paragraph.
