It was remarkable, when China opened up, to see that Shanghai was an almost perfectly preserved great commercial city from the 1940’s, a city in its heyday as it was when it rivalled Hong Kong, but then went to sleep for 60 years, while its rivals, Hong Kong, Singapore, Liverpool, Bombay and London were redeveloped and became unrecognisable.
When Empire of the Sun was filmed there they were able to use it as a film set pretty much as is.
Time has now caught up with Shanghai, and Shanghai is now catching up with its rivals, although The Bund is still reasonably intact. It is unreasonable to expect Shanghai to remain a museum piece, and perhaps this is all as it should be, but we will never again get to see such a great city preserved as it was 20 years before I was born.
Just off the picture to the right and not far from the river one might now also see the rising red brick towers of Holy Trinity (formerly Anglican) Cathedral which is being completely restored and returned to Christian use. Even the original wood and stonework is being reconstructed from photos and plans saved from before the Cultural Revolution. Lots of Chinese government money is being used for this impressive project.
This is what our lost jobs in America has given communist China. The WTO and most favored trading status have cost the US about 15 Million jobs and we are now going bankrupt…all while our technology and manufacturing base have been exported to China, and the capital flow of the world has followed. Our leaders (from both parties) have done this to us.
