(Wash. Post) Stalemate in Libya increasingly viewed as a likely outcome

U.S. officials are becoming increasingly resigned to the possibility of a protracted stalemate in Libya, with rebels retaining control of the eastern half of the divided country but lacking the muscle to drive Moammar Gaddafi from power.

Such a deadlock ”” perhaps backed by a formal cease-fire agreement ”” could help ensure the safety of Libyan civilians caught in the crossfire between the warring sides. But it could also dramatically expand the financial and military commitments by the United States and allied countries that have intervened in the six-week-old conflict, according to U.S. officials familiar with planning for the Libyan operation.

[blockquote] “Another alternative would be clearly our preferred option, which would be that they — these opposition forces and the tribes — come together and begin to create something that resembles a more democratic state that protects the rights of its people,” he said.[/blockquote] In other News from Oz, Sec’y Gates suggested that no additional security measures would be provided for Dorothy and Toto beyond the ‘No-Fly’ Zone that has suppressed Flying Monkey operations since Dorothy accidentally dropped a house on the Wicked Witch of the East. Sec’y Gates continues to hope that the Winkies will seize control of the castle, depose the Wicked Witch before Dorothy arrives, and begin the process of re-integrating her realm into the political and economic order of Oz. The Wicked Witch remains adamant the conflict can only be solved by Dorothy’s abject surrender of the Ruby slippers. President Obama is at this hour consulting with his cabinet on the escalating conflict in Oz, and has promised the full unconditional support of the United States to the Wizard in Emerald City .

In an insurgency, it is the most disciplined and dedicated of an insurgency’s leadership that is the best indicator of what direction a country will take if the insurgents overthrow a government.

The rank-and-file insurgents are usually pawns of their leadership and have little thought of how to run a country after victory. They just emotionally follow-the-leader.
