Peter Smith–Presbyterians on Verge of Vote to ordain clergy in non-celibate Same Sex Unions

The nation’s largest Presbyterian denomination is on the brink of removing its longstanding ban on ordaining non-celibate gays and lesbians.

The decisive vote could come as soon as Tuesday at a meeting of the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area in Minnesota. Or possibly in Western Kentucky.

A yes vote in either place would mark the 87th presbytery ”” making a majority of the regional governing bodies in the Louisville-based church ”” to ratify a proposed constitutional amendment. It would remove the denomination’s historic ban on ordaining anyone in a sexual relationship outside of a heterosexual marriage. The ban applies to potential pastors, elders and deacons.

    Over the cliff.

    1. Christopher Johnson [blockquote] Over the cliff. [/blockquote] Such a reactionary, outmoded, obsolete, medieval, thoroughly pre-modern, and typically fundamentalist description. Get with the times, MCJ. They are “bearing prophetic witness” and “experiencing spiritual growth through sacrificial right-sizing.”

One step closer to the destruction of America.

But wait! It will mean so many MORE people coming in to the Presbyterian church! Just like the Episcopalians, right? Oodles and boodles of them! Where will they find the room??

RE: “One step closer to the destruction of America.”

Nah — one step closer to further decline and irrelevance to America, more like.

Just think — the PCUSA church can become teensy like TECusa has.

In our city the largest downtown PCUSA church has already settled — long ago — their departure from the denomination.

The revisionist activists would rather be teensy and irrelevant than keep the nasty Christians.

Talk about self-immolation . . . it is fascinating to watch.

Interesting. Did this congregation get to keep its property? I assume so; different polity, constitution, laws.

In my city the largest Presbyterian church settled about two decades ago over W.O. at some cost to the Presbytery. But the local presbytery here did not vote with the denominational changes. Nonetheless some congregations are looking for the exit signs.

What it will do is to send more folks over to the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), which has a strong foothold in most places where there is also a PCUSA church.

  9. Larry Morse says:

It must be obvious to PECUSA that allowing such arrangements would be contrary to scripture and would damage membership. So why do it? has the TEC belief that an agenda trumps all else somehow gained control? Larry

    Larry,
I think that like many so-called Christian leaders, many pastors in PCUSA (not to be confused with PECUSA, although the differences may be becoming difficult to notice) obviously believe the Bible is just another nice book with some nice sayings, but nothing to take too seriously and all that. This is the 21st century, of course, and we’re so much wiser in our understanding of what God really meant to have us know.

Group hugs, now, and go out and feel good.

#6–They haven’t left yet, but they called a minister several years ago who is not resident in this Presbytery–he is a member of the National Church of Scotland–so he can’t be deposed when they leave. They have also joined a group of “Confessing Congregations”, who intend to band together and try to leave. Many members of mine and Sarah’s downtown TEC church have left for 1st Pres. since 2003 because of this issue in TEC. But here’s the rub: This Sunday the minister’s sermon at 1st Pres was a plea for money (the sermons are televised and my wife watches them every week). Because of all this they are losing membership and their income is down. We have a downtown PCA Church which is growing like crazy between TEC, PCUSA and the Methodists. I think any church in PCUSA that wants to leave will have a fight on their hands, just like us.

Almost enough to make you think there’s total depravity.

  13. Chris Molter says:

#12, utter stupidity doesn’t necessarily prove total depravity 😉

“CNSNews.com) – Anticipating the elimination of the military ban on homosexuality, the Office of the Chief of Navy Chaplains has decided that same-sex couples in the Navy will be able to get married in Navy chapels, and that Navy chaplains will be allowed to perform the ceremonies — if homosexual marriage is legal in the state where the unions are to be performed.”

  15. Larry Morse says:

Please straighten me out – and I say that with a smidge of sarcasm – who is PCUSA,PECUSA,PCA?
#14, DADT had nothing to do with ssm. Why has the Navy taken this additional step? This appears to mean that the wedding is Christian and sacramental, not civil. This means that God has joined them etc. Are you sure your information is correct? This is not at all like the Navy’s usual caution. Larry

    Larry:

    PCUSA=Presbyterian Church (USA)–the liberal ones.
PCA=Presbyterian Church in America–one of the conservative ones (the one a lot of individuals will flee to)
EPC=Evangelical Presbyterian Church–another of the conservative ones (the one that a lot of PCUSA churches will flee to)
PECUSA=Protestant Episcopal Church in the USA–a non-Christian religious organization

And the march toward religiously endorsed moral decadence continues……At some point someone should declare the Protestant Reformation in the original Reformation churches KAPUT!!

  18. David Keller says:

#17–No problem. The original Reformation churches are now KAPUT.
