A Prayer for the Feast Day of Henry Martyn

O God of the nations, who didst give to thy faithful servant Henry Martyn a brilliant mind, a loving heart, and a gift for languages, that he might translate the Scriptures and other holy writings for the peoples of India and Persia: Inspire in us, we beseech thee, a love like his, eager to commit both life and talents to thee who gavest them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

  1. New Reformation Advocate says:

Not the least of the sacrifices that Henry Martyn made to serve Christ overseas was giving up his chance to marry his beloved sweetheart and fiance, who decided she just couldn’t handle missionary life. Martyn never did marry, just as Tyndale was never safe to do so.

October is a great month for celebrating the courage and dedication of great Bible translators, including William Tyndale (Oct. 6th), and that remarkable Lithuanian Jewish convert who became an Episcopal translator of the OT into “Wenli”, a colloquial form of Mandarin, Samuel Isaac Joseph Schereschewsky (Oct. 16th). But Henry Martyn managed to surpass them by translating the Bible into SEVERAL major (Asian) languages, including Hindi/Urdu.

Thank God for them all, and for the thousands of people engaged in Bible translation work today.
