This week on Reporting Religion we hear from one of the world’s most eminent scientists and climatologists, Sir Jihn Houghton. He tells us how his strong Christian faith combines with his scientific work, and how it drives him to protect the world and deal with climate change. He tells us what he said to German Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of this week’s G8 Summit.
good headline… belief in human causes for climate change requires a lot of faith, since the science is contradictory and non-conculsive.
What? A climate-change article posted 8 hours ago and no commenters dogmatically proclaiming an unchanging climate?
Irenaeus,
This commenter believes the climate is changing (as it has many times in the history of our small planet) but not that Mankind has anything (or very little) to do with it. Please note the distinction. 😉
oops, the “(or very little)” was a hold over from an edit, and doesn’t really fit the new context. sheesh. who said this stuff was easy?
This position is not symmetric with respect to the outcomes. One would hope that “his strong Christian faith combined with his scientific work” also drives him to protect the world from the catastrophic damage to the global economy which will likely result from ill conceived attempts to perturb the current pattern of climate change when the consequences of such actions are at best only qualitatively understood.
Jim [#3]: Understood. Hence the phrasing “no commenters dogmatically proclaiming an unchanging climate.” Besides, I wouldn’t call you dogmatic!
Irenaeus:
thanks!
