(ENS) The Presiding Bishop’s message to the church on General Convention 2012

The General Convention which took place in Indianapolis in July offered new and creative responses to the call of the gospel in our day. We saw gracious and pastoral responses to polarizing issues, as well as a new honesty about the need for change.

General Convention addressed a number of significant issues that will impact the life and witness of this Church for years into the future ”“ and they include many more things beyond what you’ve heard about in the news. The way we worked together also represented a new reality, working to adapt more creatively to our diverse nature as a Church.

Jesus is mentioned once — following a sentence in which he is compared to the character from the Mother Goose rhyme “Jack Be Nimble.” Jesus is nimble.

  2. Christopher Johnson says:

Interesting that the Presiding Bishop mentioned all this new cooperation that suddenly sprang up at GenCon, this “new reality, working to adapt more creatively to our diverse nature as a Church.” Coming up with “new” ways for all of us to live with our “differences” is the easiest thing in the world when everyone who genuinely disagrees with you has either fled or been run off.

One would really think she would find a ghost writer since preaching and clearly conveying messages in written form are not her strong suit.

I thought this was one of Mrs Schori’s better efforts. Of course I don’t agree with much in it. The selling of 815 will be a blessing, no doubt, since they’re losing money on it and need to pay back that big loan they took out. Looking at a photo of the building the other day it seemed to me to be a fine piece of architecture, but TEC no longer deserves to have it.

It was my turn to lead the prayers of the peolple this morning. Prayer VI.

When it came to the sentences of prayer for clergy, including the presiding bishop, I prayed that she would be infilled with the Holy Spirit because I have seen no proof in her utterances or actions that she is so guided spiritually.

  6. Jill Woodliff says:

Yeah, when the new Title IV was proposed, it too was described as more pastoral.
