(NPR) Why Being Stuck On A Tarmac With The Philly Orchestra Rocks

There are few things as annoying as being stuck on a tarmac ”” in a cramped, packed plane ”” for long periods of time. But when you have some of the members of the Philadelphia Orchestra on your flight, it could turn magical.

No, seriously.

It happened to passengers on a flight from Beijing to Macau, this week. They had been sitting on the tarmac for three hours when a quartet of musicians from the Philadelphia Orchestra pulled out their instruments and provided…[a wonderful diversion].

Read it all and please do not miss the video of what happened.

Made my day! No; made my week! No; made my year! At least Someone has a delightful sense of humour! Thanks Kendall for pulling this one out of the hat.

I love how classical musicians and the organizations that employ them have finally figured out how to “take the word to the streets”. You never seem to hear any boos when they do so, and I’m sure the musicians enjoy it too, even though the chosen venues are not always easy ones to play.

My daughter’s ballet theatre takes ballet into schools. We also have a special fund to pay for tickets to perfromances for underprivileged, mostly minority children who would never see ballet but for this program. The rub is how much we struggle for the resources to do this. What my daughter and her cohorts do truly enriches the lives of real people. We are lucky to live in a community that supports the arts, but a lot of communities have no arts at all or they are only for the elite. Thank goodness for those who sacrifice to bring beauty to everybody!

I just love the video, especially the applause at the end.
