    As noted in the comments, the handwriting itself is noteworthy.
    To me, it looks like one of those late medieval scripts. Somewhat
    like “batarde” (spelling …?) – I think I once saw a copy of the
    “Canterbury Tales” executed in that or similar script. Of
    course, as a professor of Old English, Tolkien would have had
    knowledge and appreciation of such scripts.
