1915 Dec 12, Frank Sinatra, actor and singer, was born in Hoboken New Jersey.

1964 Dec 12, Kenya formally became a republic.

    Bypassing Kendall’s question, let me comment on the first item, the birth of John Jay on this day in 1745. As a Richmond area resident, I take pride and joy in pointing out that the first Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court was both a devout, practicing Anglican, and a Richmonder. John Jay deserves to be considered a major Founding Father of this country, in some ways he was as influential as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson, and like them, he was a Virginian. But he was undoubtedly a better Anglican than the other two (Jefferson not even being a Christian, since he was a Deist).
