Not to nitpick (well, ok, maybe) but we often get the title wrong. As one of the commenters at the link pointed out, the line is always “As I went down _in_ the river to pray”. Small but significant difference, although the song works either way.
#1–That’s what she sings: “in” in every verse. One of my all time favorite movie scenes is in “Brother Where Art Thou” when Delmar jumps in the river to this song, and comes out “saved”. Paul Zahl preaches one heck of a sermon on that scene!
