Steve Rosenbloom: Guess what? Now you're two games from 101 years

This might not be the end of the world, but Cubs fans can see it from here. The Cubs spent six months working and hitting and pitching and fielding and sweating to get home-field advantage in the playoffs, and they gave it away in five innings.

They might’ve given this series away, too, because losing the first game at home in a five-game series is exponentially more disastrous than doing it in a seven-game series.

So now what?

Read it all. It was a horrible night for Cubs fans. Dempster didn’t have it, it is as simple as that. Congratulations to the Dodgers–KSH.

In 1984 the Cubs won the first two games of a best-of-five series with San Diego and still managed to give it away. What’s the difference?

I hope the Cubs pull it out (although I am a White Sox fan).
It is a concern that the fans are so fragile. Watching the game on TV I could “feel” the hopelessness coming off the screen. Not that I do not understand the sense of futility that comes from being a Chicago baseball fan (2005 being the exception) but I gotta figure the Cubs ball team is negatively effected by the fans. If Zambrano and Hardin pitch to form the Cubs are okay.

As a Cardinals fan, last night did not disappoint me.

I have never cared for these best-of-5 series. They are more emotionally packed and leave little room for error, which is probably why Major League Baseball loves them for their ratings. I think if the Cubs can get over this hump, they are in good shape for the rest of the playoffs, but seeing as they lost one at home, which was where they had a much higher winning percentage through the season as opposed to on the road, I fear this does not bode well.

    Fear the Goat.

Why the gloom? Its one game. Relax… take a deep breath… and wait for tonight’s game.

Rosenbloom and the rest of the Chicago press ( they write for the Tribune by the way. “Bite the hand that feeds you” much?) have been having a field day slapping the Cubs all season long. Yes the Cubs stunk last night but they were true to form for the year–scalding hot streaks where pitchers hit every strike; everyone got on base; and quite simply, they just could not lose along with periods when putting nine men on the field seemed a challenge. For those of us whose lives were irrevocably altered by 1969, 1984, 1989, 2003, and 2007 it all seems, to be Yogi-esque, “deja vous all over again”, but this is 2008. It was one game with everybody pressing. Z man needs to throw strikes. Soriano and Ramierex need to get on base even if they have to lean into the ball and get hit. All of the Cubs need to avoid stupid mistakes that lose ballgames. And most of all, they need to enjoy the post season while it lasts, as long as it lasts, knwoing that every time they won, it means they get to play baseball one more day. And the media ( the Chicago Tribune and the TV crew–they stunk worse than the Cubs!!) need to shut up, eat their hot dogs, and drink their beers. Being a Cub fan is not for the faint of heart!

  9. Ad Orientem says:

uh oh 5-0 Dodgers its not lookin good for the cubbies.

  10. MikeS says:

Game 2: 9-1 Dodgers over Cubbies in the bottom of the 8th, 1 out.

Can the Heimlich Maneuver be successful at this point?

  11. MikeS says:

    Game 2: 10-3 Dodgers

Heimlich Maneuver failed. Get the paddles warmed up.

    On the bright side:

It took the church almost as long to defeat Arianism. I shouldn’t get my hopes up for something as unimportant as Cubs World Series wins to happen as fast as that battle.
