Congratulations to the University of Texas Longhorns

They outplayed Oklahoma today in the second half and deserved to win–but that was the worst officiating in a major game in as long as I can remember. Read it all.

Amen, that was a horrendously officiated game.

  2. Dallas Priest says:

Badly officiated but a happy ending!!

  3. Jerod says:

Poor officiating, but it balanced out in the end. The late hit on Colt McCoy was pretty ticky-tack, but that “late hit” on the OU punter was absolutely ridiculous.

    Hook ’em horns.

Officiating: lousy but balancedly lousy (each team got a TD they didn’t deserve; each team got a “late hit” foul that was also undeserved.
Playing: fierce and fiery and fair; the fans got their money’s worth.
Outcome: As a Longhorn alum, I’m pleased, but I do wish that McCoy, Shipley, & Cosby had had an offensive team on the field with them to …uh, play some football. Bradford was magnificent under pressure, but the Longhorn defense finally rattled him.
Best moment of the game: After the game, watching McCoy and Bradford talking together like the two old friends they are, and the general camaraderie between the two teams all over the field.

This is the best of who we are as a nation: Fight like hell on the field; when the whistle blows, shake hands and congratulate each other for a game well played. Oh that our presidential politics could be as straightforward, subject to six-camera scrutiny, and grace-filled. Sadly, it’s all too scripted for deception, and the refs are “in on the fix.” Sigh. ……and yet with that sigh, the memory of McCoy and Bradford embracing, two Americans who know that, whichever side of the Red River one lives on, when it comes down to it, we are all on the same team.

Go Aggies! Yes, I know. Wishful thinking.

And congratulations to my Dukes! JMU scored two touchdowns in the final minute to beat the Spiders in Richmond 38-31, with the winning TD being scored on a 69 yard punt return with 1 second remaining. It doesn’t get any better than that.

P.S. – JMU was ranked no. 1 in the Playoff Division (I-AA) polls coming into the game – Richmond had been no. 1 earlier this year.

    #6–Eat ‘Em Up Cougars–now that’s wishful thinking.

Who knew there were so many ‘Horns on this blog (including me)?

The primary purpose of officiating at any sports activity should not be to achieve fairness but to achieve correctness. [blockquote] No incorrect call should be excused just because an equally incompetent call was made against the other team.[/blockquote] Unfortunately the competence of Big 12 officials in general is to say the least questionable. I did not have a “horse in the race” in this game however with that said there is no excuse for the absolute repeated incompetence shown by the officials and its potential impact of the flow of the game. Just because it was apparent the best team won this specific game it should not either excuse the officiating or serve as an excuse for the conference not to improve their image in officiating in the future.
The best officiating is when there is an absence of comment after the event

I coached and refereed in college and after. To the fan in the stand, you are correct – the ref is there to ensure ‘correctness.’ In actuality, the primary purpose of officiating is to ensure safety; the secondary, to teach sportsmanship; correctness is tertiary.

That said, I am always amazed at how good officials at that level generally are, but it sounds like this crew had a bad day. It happens. Ask Ed Hochuli.

BTW, go Longhorns and Penn State.

I grew up in Omaha Nebraska. I remember having to strain to hear the sermons on Sundays in the fall because Dean Frickie was hoarse ofter spending Saturday afternoon yelling at the radio.

I have two favorite college teams. Nebraska and who ever is playing Oklahoma this week. I am glad that Texas beat them! Hook’em Horns!

    YBIC,
    Phil Snyder

ps – of course, when Texas plays A&M;(where a number of my friends attended) or Nebraska, all bets are off.
