Trinity Wall Street is convening a group of bishops from Anglican Communion provinces in Africa and their companions in the Episcopal Church “for a consultation to strengthen relationships, develop mission partnerships, and to discover new opportunities to bear witness to the Gospel,” according to a Trinity news release.
Hosted by Iglesia Episcopal Reformada de España, “Walking to Emmaus: Discovering New Mission Perspectives in Changing Times” will be held in El Escorial, Spain July 21 through July 26.
The consultation will be rooted in prayer and breaking bread together; using different liturgies from the provinces of the Anglican Communion to enrich the experience of the participants, the release said.
“Mission flourishes best through collaboration,” said the Rev. Canon James G. Callaway, Jr., deputy for faith formation and development at Trinity Church. “This gathering provides an opportunity for people of shared faith and mutual responsibility to come together to further develop partnerships that address important needs in the world.”
The Rev. Dr. James H. Cooper, the rector of Trinity Church-St. Paul’s Chapel, noted that Trinity Church is an “active partner in the global south, especially strengthening the church in Africa by facilitating the ability of its leaders to take control of factors that influence their lives.”

It may also be informative to discover who is on the invitation list. Does Trinity Wall Street have close connections with the province led by South Africa?
I personally had a conversation with a Bishop in Rwanda, who said a few years ago he was visited by representatives of Trinity Wall Street.
The Bishop said it was clear they were offering money/aid in exchange for accepting TEC’s innovations on human sexuality.
He told them to get lost.
Translation: We (Trinity Wall Street) will offer to through tons of money their way if they will see things our way and let us control things.

Had this invitation gone out five years ago, no one would have batted an eyelash. It is only because of the current “troubles” that anyone would question the motives of Trinity Wall Street. Sad.
I reject the notion that TEC tries to buy friends and supporters: that charge is putting the worst spin on things. I would want to talk with the bishop in Rwanda and find out what exactly was said compared to what he inferred.

I agree that impugning motives before having all the facts makes it difficult to maintain civil conversation, but what we have witnessed going on within the leadership of ECUSA over the past several years has put many of us in a skeptical and dismissive frame of mind.
My general impression of the modern America political scene is that whoever has the money to buy support (witness Congressional ear marks and voter loyalty within Congressional districts) seems to seems to have undue influence over those seeking/accepting the money. It’s called ‘buying political support.’
In the case of impoverished third world nations where very very little money goes a long long way, I find the old adage describing secular society’s ‘golden rule,’ “Whoever has the gold makes the rules.”
