Swine flu warps life in Newberry, South Carolina

On a day when state health officials cautiously declared the swine flu an epidemic in South Carolina, county schools superintendent Bennie Bennett was trying to convince a Bishopville baseball team it was safe to play in Newberry.

But after nonstop media coverage following a group of private school students’ trip to Cancun, Mexico, two weeks ago, fears of the disease had grown so much that janitors wearing surgical masks spent the afternoon wiping down third-grade classrooms in Newberry with nonacidic disinfectant bathroom cleaner ”” even though no students there were infected.

Newberry County’s 6,000 public school students are at home today. A cancer research fundraiser that had amassed $120,000 in early pledges is canceled.

I think this is about the most overblown thing I have seen in a long time. The media are carrying on like it’s Black Death, and its just ridiculous. We shouldn’t blow it off, but the fact remains that variants of the flu crop up all the time.

I agree, there were 1,300 deaths in the US from the flu this past season, and that did not make the news. Currently we have one death, a toddler, which fits the usual pattern of flu related deaths. Since the flu virus does not live long outside the host body, spending all of this time and money to wipe down the school is a big waste. However, I’m sure their legal staff probably told them to do that to help with any potential lawsuits.

One good thing about the “scare” is perhaps a renewed awareness that folks who are sick (with colds, flus, digestive bugs, etc.) owe it to their communities to stay home until they get well and the reminder to wash our hands frequently. The closing of all these schools and events is ludicrous. How many people today have a stomach virus and are out usining public bathrooms and spreading the those bugs? We are heading to New York later in May. I will not stay away from the theatre or off the subway because some school kids who went to Mexico got sick and had mild illnesses. Not many people who go to Mexico avoid some sort of food borne illness and we don’t close down schools. I will wash my hands frequently — but then I do anyway.

It is really hard to understand how this virus has become a pandemic and has spread in all over the world. Now all people have the equal ability to catch swine or stomach bug (well I have read that this virus also is becoming very dangerous for our health). That’s why we all should follow all doctor’s advices about the hygiene in order not to catch some flu. Personally I always use swine flu mask and only with it I feel safe. Well thanks a lot for sharing this useful information. Keep up publishing those great posts in the future by the way.

Well, everybody knows that health is a very important now. There is a famous proverb “Health is above wealth”. Nobody would deny the importance of its meaning. Some factors that can cause wrinkles: Sun’s UV rays – Too much exposure to the sun can cause wrinkles and sun spots. Smoking – Smoking has a negative effect on the skin. It affects its ability to repair its self from damage. Stress – Stess can affect the well being of a person. This is exactly why it is so important to only choose collagen creams that are made with all natural and organic ingredients. Good creams make face healthy. Reality is, it is indeed a part of everyone’s life. We will all age. Just because aging if part of the natural order of things does not mean we must accept what the years (and exposure to the environment) have done to us. You can dwell on different ideas about it, which I may not know but as much as possible, I would want to continue maintaining a young image.
