The Anglican Church in North America Provincial Council has endorsed the Anglican Covenant and expressed solidarity with the Communion Partners.
The Covenant is a four-part document that outlines the basics of the Christian faith as Anglicans have historically understood and practiced it. It also provides for accountability among Communion members. The Covenant was initiated by the 2005 Windsor Report which in turn was prompted by the crisis in the Anglican Communion created by the deviation from Biblical teaching and morality in North America.
It’s seems strange to me that no one has commented on this. The Covenant apparently has much more in it than many gave it credit for: on the one side, TEC did everything possible to prevent its passage at Kingston, and now on the other side, Stephen Noll and now ACNA have encouraged its adoption. This will be most interesting to watch over the next few months. I can imagine by next Easter, ACNA and 7 to 10 Global South provinces having already endorsed the whole Covenant while TEC avoided even considering any part of it at GC2009. Since the review committee does not need to speak until November, assuming that they change very little, TEC will find itself behind the events and in a difficult place to catch up and re-interpret the Covenant in a liberal/progressive/reappraising manner. Let’s keep praying for Abp Chew–I am delighted that he sent an official delegation/representative to Bedford.
