The AAC Tracks The Episcopal Church' s Canonical Abuse

The American Anglican Council today made public an accounting of how The Episcopal Church (TEC) has spent millions of dollars in over 50 lawsuits, deposed or inhibited 12 bishops and more than 400 other clergy, and violated its own canons numerous times. The paper, titled “The Episcopal Church: Overbearing and Unjust Episcopal Acts,” chronicles each of these subjects and a number of other abuses or injustices committed against faithful Anglicans in the U.S.

“The Episcopal Church is systematically targeting, intimidating, suing, and ultimately persecuting orthodox Anglicans throughout the U.S.” said the Rt. Rev. David C. Anderson, President and CEO of the American Anglican Council. “This paper illustrates the lengths to which TEC leaders will go to silence the voices of orthodox Christians in the Anglican Communion – Anglicans whose only offense was to stand for the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and Anglican Communion teaching.”

For a lawyer, the author of this piece overlooks (or finesses) central facts. For instance, people who are elected or appointed to Vestries or as delegates to their Diocesan Conventions assume the role of fiduciaries for their parish or diocese OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH. For them to vote to alienate property from their Episcopal Church parish or diocese is to violate their fiduciary duties. That is an actionable offense. When bank officers waste or alienate a bank’s property unlawfully, they have violated their fiduciary duties and they will be sued or prosecuted -same thing as wandering vestry members and delegates are subject to.
The “orthodox” should be grateful that more than Don Armstrong have been charged with felonies for breaking their fiduciary duties.
The proper thing for church people to do when faced with proposals to take property out of the Episcopal Church is a) to vote “No” or b) resign their office.
The second fallacy or mis-statement of facts is to assert that TEC has unilaterally initiated punishing lawsuits, without provocation. I assume there are some naive enough to believe that, but they are a dwindling number — most have moved to New York City in order to cash in on a wonderful offer to buy the Brooklyn Bridge.
