His quoting of two people is decisive for me: Lamin Sanneh’s “the vernacular logic of the Gospelâ€; and John Webster’s “The Self-Organizing Power of the Gospel of Christ: Episcopacy and Community Formationâ€. The first because it highlights the way God both incarnates himself into cultures yet also transforms them. The second because it shows how a ministry of oversight and discipline is inherent in the very Gospel of the Lordship of Jesus as Redeemer of the world, since episcopacy [i]indicates[/i] the Church’s unity, which is properly the gift of Christ alone . Finally, if such lines of thought were really taken to heart and practised, many of our ills would be … over!
In 1991, the Church of England had to choose between two candidates for Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Nazir-Ali and Rowan Williams. I think it would be recognised now by most that CofE made an abysmally poor choice…
