Church of Nigeria Vows Not To Deviate From Its Vision Despite the Challenges Being Faced

The Anglican Archbishop however challenged the 121 dioceses in the Church of Nigeria to intensify efforts on winning souls, embark on projects that will have direct bearing for the increase of the present members of the Anglican church in Nigeria from the present 20 million to 50 million out of the present 150 million of the Nigeria Population.

He also appealed to the mother dioceses of the newly created missionary dioceses not to abandon their spiritual babies but to lend helping hands in nursing them to maturity.

On the Convocation of Anglicans in the North America (CANA), Archbishop Akinola commended Bishop Martyn Minns for his doggedness in seeing that CANA continues to grow despite the enormous resources being committed by the America’s Episcopal Church (TEC) to crush CANA. He stressed that Church of Nigeria will gladly turn CANA over to the Communion once the condition that led to its creation have been reversed by TEC.

On Lambeth Conference, Akinola said Nigeria is not a problem of the Communion rather those who breaks the rules and the bonds of affection with impunity must repent and ensure that the broken communion be restored for the Church of Nigeria to be in the next Lambeth Conference.

    Did anyone catch this:
[blockquote] The Synod re-elected five incumbent archbishops of different provinces. They are:
    1. The Most Rev. Maxwell Anikwenwa, of Awka Diocese as Archbishop of the Niger province.
    2. The Most Rev. Ephraim Ademowo, of Lagos Diocese as Archbishop of Lagos province.
    3. The Most Rev. Bennett Okoro, of Orlu Diocese as Archbishop of Owerri province.
    4. The Most Rev. Samuel Abe, of Ekiti Diocese as Archbishop of Ondo province.
    5. The Most Rev. Joseph Akinfenwa, of Ibadan Diocese as Archbishop of Ibadan province.

[b] Four suffragan (assisting) bishops were also elected for CANA, the church’s mission in America.[/b] [/blockquote]

Another four bishops for the us? Wow. What’s the total then from the extra-provincial?

  2. Timothy Fountain says:

Four new bishops are named at the CANA site…

  3. plainsheretic says:

[blockquote] The bishops-elect are the Rev’d Canon Roger Ames (Akron, OH), the Rev’d Canon David Anderson (Atlanta, GA), the Ven. Amos Fagbamiye (Indianapolis, IN), and the Rev’d Canon Nathan Kanu (Oklahoma City, OK). The consecrations will take place in the USA before the end of 2007, at a date and place yet to be determined. These four bishops-elect will join Missionary Bishop Martyn Minns and Suffragan Bishop David Bena in providing an indigenous ecclesiastical structure for faithful Anglicans in this country. [/blockquote]

This is like the Israeli policy. If you attack us (gene) then we will retaliate 10 fold(minns, ames, anderson, fagbeyama, etc, etc, etc,)

Anyone know which church Rev’d David Anderson pastors in Atlanta?

  5. Jeff in VA says:

    justinmartyr (#4),

I believe he was serving with the AAC, and then temporarily stepped in to lead his former parish, St. James, Newport Beach (CA) when Praveen Bunyan+ resigned. I am not sure he was ever attached to a particular parish in Atlanta, but I may be wrong.

  6. justinmartyr says:

Thanks Jeff (#5). I had not heard of him. I wonder if he will be based in Atlanta. There’s a small but strong continuing Anglican presence here, but I don’t know of much of a conservative Episcopal following. I guess that most of these bishops will be missionary bishops.

I wonder if CANA et al have made overtures to the continuing Anglican churches (APA, etc.). That seems to me a very fruitful avenue for growth?

  7. Alice Linsley says:

The Church of Nigeria will not depart from its vision/mission which is to “be bible based, spiritually dynamic, united, disciplined, self-supporting, committed to pragmatic evangelism, social welfare and a Church that epitomizes the genuine Love of Christ.”

May God defend them and equip them in their determination.

  8. RalphM says:

    Plainsparson,
CANA is growing and is spread nationwide. +Minns travels almost weekly. These suffragans will actually go out to the churches they are to pastor – in other words, they will have direct contact with their flocks rather than sitting at HQs being a business manager.

They are are to shepherd a growing flock – not something often seen in the mainline US churches.

  9. John A. says:

plainsparson, What attacks are you referring to? CANA is simply doing the normal process of managing church life. None of the new or existing Bishops are being installed to cause harm to TEC but to support CANA members. Do you see it differently?
