Georgie Hanlin: A Soldier's Wife Bids us to Honor His Service

So how do I accept what my husband does for a living? Quite easily. He serves his country and does so courageously, next to other respectable men and women. He represents America with the utmost dignity while overseas. The Army is lucky to have him, and so am I. While people sit back and criticize what soldiers do, my husband risks his life over and over again. Let’s be honest: It’s a job that most people don’t want. Many don’t think about it because other people do it.

Other people do it.

Instead of trying to figure out how to accept or justify or understand what my husband does because you don’t believe in war, I’d beg you to know that no one wants war; no one likes war. We’d all love a perfect world, but we do not live in one. Our country is at war; two of them, actually. Soldiers, my husband being one of them, have to deploy. We, as families, have to worry and wait and hope.

I believe that the next time somebody asks me how I accept what my husband does for a living, I will simply tell that person to appreciate my husband’s service and to enjoy his or her freedom while my husband does what his country asks of him.

Read it all.

    Amen!

Anarchy is NOT the answer! God bless those who stand between those we love and anarchy.

    Don

  2. Bart Hall (Kansas, USA) says:

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

(verse 4 of our national anthem)

I wonder what those who “don’t believe in war” would REALLY do if we had no national defense, no homeland security, no boarder protection. I suggest they go read “A Libertarian View of Gay Marriage” over on Stand Firm.
I for one am PROUD of our military–at every turn! My daughter, my son-in-law, and I have each served–Air Force, Navy, Army. My husband could NOT be prouder. This woman deserves to be honored just as her husband is for their great good faith in the basic worth of such service!

I can say a couple of things abiut this atricle. First, this lady needs to find better freinds. Second, I think what her friend said is a rarity. I was in line a Zaxby’s on Friday. I weasr a Globe and Anchor in my blazer lapel. The 17 year-old behind the counter asked me if I was in the Marines. I told him I was and he said, “Thank you for your service, sir.” Third, when I was involved in TEC politics and would get that question, which, by the way was less often than you might imagine for that crowd, I always used to say, “the only reason you have the right to even ask the question is because every day, all over the world, very brave men and women stand ready to do unspeakable things in your name. I was one of them. You are welcome for what I did for you.”
