A letter alleging the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and the Church of the Province of Central Africa have dissented from the final communiqué of last month’s All African Bishops Meeting in Entebbe, does not have the official backing of the two provinces The Church of England Newspaper has learned.
Leaders of the two provinces tell CEN that while parts of the dissenting letter reflect the views held by some Southern and Central Africa bishops, neither province’s House of Bishops have discussed nor endorsed the letter purportedly issued on their behalf.
So, as far as anybody knows, the dissenting letter could have been written by one or two people–say, by Bp. Trevor Mwamba, who had been dropped from the program late along with Canon Kearon after the new ACC agenda was exposed? Bp. Mwamba is mentioned above as the one who referred to the “North American Schismatics” and as one dropped from the program; this could well account for the negative reference to the ACNA in the letter in question. It should certainly be widely publicized now that the letter does not represent two African provinces at all. This is especially important because the false claim was made very prominently in the Church Times (which based its headline and lead on that misleading letter) and throughout the Anglican press. I wondered about it from the very beginning–it had the whiff of a boondoggle, I thought.
Amen.
Sadly, many orthodox (but overly naive) Anglicans were led astray by this letter.
