Note especially the comment at about 44:30 in regard to the current Anglican Communion crisis, where it has reached the stage where there is “no trust…”
At the risk of being forward, I’d like to give Bishop Anis a hug for trying, but I truly believe that, no matter how much Biblical study is encouraged, no matter what they hear from other provinces, no matter how many lectures they get re: collegiality, etc., TEC is not going to see itself as anything other than “right” and/or “prophetic” and it is not going to turn away from its current agenda. All efforts will instead be directed at the continued hijacking of Communion structures. It is the structures(or Instruments) that need to “stand up” against the Anschluss, starting with the Archbishop of Canterbury(figure those odds), but so far it looks much more like agreement, appeasement, or outright “rolling over”. And when anyone will not attempt to make order out of chaos, one will reap what one sows.
Bookworm, #2, quoting Bishop Mouneer from Cherie Wetzel’s report which Dr. Harmon posted here yesterday:[blockquote]I agree that the times today need Orthodox Anglicans from around the world to lead. We’ve been reactive for 10 years now and need to take the lead and look at a gathering of Bishops and Primates. The Global South bishops and primates need to meet with orthodox bishops in the West. This meeting is being planned.[/blockquote]They are not standing idle. The rigged meetings which they will not attend will be replaced with others.
Bookworm- on the Bible studies, this is an area that is easily identified as in need of correction, and he is pointing out the “way forward” to correct it. If we in ACNA, or western churches outside of TEC, do not get better Biblical and theological education, the next generation will fall into the same trap as the current one.
As Katherine points out above, the GS is engaged in trying to right the ship that is the Anglican Communion, but we would do well on our end to follow the advice of orthodox bishops on improving Bible studies and theological education of the laity, so we do not end up fighting these battles all over again in 20 or 30 years. And we would also do well to make such contribution as we can to our GS brothers so that the Bible can be translated into all the languages of Africa and the GS- so that every Anglican can have a Bible in his own language.
Some problems of Anglicanism can be solved at the macro level of councils. But many of the problems of Anglicanism in the west need to be solved in our living rooms, and by self discipline and education.
It was a delight to attend the Mere Anglicanism Conference and especially to see Bishop Mouneer Anis in person. I appreciated his clarity that there is no boycott. Rather, the process has been usurped and the is manipulated in a manner that the conclusion is formed prior to the meeting ever taken place. Thus, he shared that there is no point in participating in these meeting for there simply is no integrity….
My paraphrasing of his words….but cooked and precooked (his own words) say it all.
The process is corrupt and does not allow nor support clarity or honesty nor address the crisis nor establish any discipline.
Such clarity and honesty is refreshing.
Very impressive. And good comments from everyone.
I hadn’t noticed ++Anis’ comment about planning for a worldwide meeting of (orthodox) primates and bishops. That will be wonderful – bring it on!
Please note that now that the transcript in full of this talk has been posted as a “sticky” post at the top of the blog, I would be grateful if you would make any further discussion of it there.
