From NPR: Scientists Examine Climate Change in Bible Tales

The Bible is filled with stories of major environmental changes, like floods, droughts and desertification, often shown as God’s righteous punishment for human misdeeds. In these stories, some scientists see a chance to understand a little more about the world. They have searched for the scientific truth behind such stories as Noah’s flood.

Listen to it all.

Is this a concession to intelligent design?

  2. libraryjim says:

    LOL, Roy.
I would also add the seven years of famine in Joseph’s Egypt in Genesis could also be attributed to Global climate change.

  3. RoyIII says:

With climate change, considering current events, pollution and global warming, we could direct them to Revelations 9:2 “and he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the asir were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.”

#3: Odd. That sounds like the B wing boys’ john in the last high school I taught in. But this is a different John. L

  5. Rolling Eyes says:

If only Noah had driven a Prius and purchased more carbon off-setters…

  6. Jeffersonian says:

I have some high-class snark to post, but it would get stomped on by little elven feet in a matter of nanoseconds.

  7. Christopher Hathaway says:

So, are these scientists actually going to accept the historical record of the Bible as scientifically reliable?

Maybe they’re just using the standard TEC hermeneutic: When the Bible confirms what they believe they recognize its authority. When it contradicts them they dismiss it.

  8. Adam 12 says:

NPR gets a lot of grant-money that is climate-change specific. I am sure it makes them go out and scratch for new gimmicks for stories all the time.

Oh, my. This is DANGEROUS ground. Just think what happened to hypotheses of Higher criticism when the science of archeology substantiated the biblical record. All those lost “imaginary” civilizations previously unknown to history unearthed by archeologists on the basis of biblical accounts really created a disastrous data situation that vitiated the whole edifice (not that that made an impact on the “thought”). Think textual criticism in its lowest form: manuscript data. Egads!

hmmm, do you think God used climate change to produce the plagues on Egypt leading up to the Exodus? Some scholars postulate a volcanic eruption, which does also cause changes in local climate conditions, so — could be?
