There are three Missionary Dioceses listed on the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) website: CANA, Congo, and the Nomadic Mission. Of course we all know the relationship between CANA and TEC. Does anyone know why the Province de L’Eglise Anglicane Du Congo does not have jurisdiction over its own missionary bishop in the Kasai region bordering on Angola, rather than having a bishop there under Nigerian jurisdiction? I can understand that Congo might want financial assistance from Nigeria, but why cede jurisdiction?
Dale, I think (and this is a guess with a capital G) that the situation is so unstable in the DR Congo that they need outside help. If so, the Nigerian missionary bishop may well be there with the permission or even at the request of the Abp of the Province de L’Eglise Anglicane Du Congo.
There is no doubt about the request and permission (the Global South Anglican website has a picture of the Congolese archbishop doing a photo-op with the Nigerian missionary bishop). I was just curious why they decided to have the bishop answer to Abuja rather than Kinshasa, given that his flock (and I assume his clergy) are Congolese.
