In both India and Egypt, and as of several years ago in Turkey, major hotels and shopping malls have guards and airport style metal detectors and X-ray belt. It’s not really annoying once you get used to it. Cars approaching closely are stopped, trunk opened, and mirror run underneath looking for bombs. We’ve been lucky, I think, at home.

Louisiana or Los Angeles? (no link)

  3. Sue Martinez says:

Br’er Rabbit, it’s Los Angeles, of course. I guess I’ll be doing my shopping online this year.

  4. libraryjim says:

I heard this last year, too.

  5. Brian from T19 says:

Well now they’ve gone and ruined it!

  6. Nate says:

#1–Just visited the Westward Expansion museum in St.Louis (just under the arch)–They had a system similar to what airports have for screening folks–If someone really wanted to destroy it, though, I’m not sure metal detectors and x-raying jackets would stop them. It might make it more difficult. I would be unwilling to put up with such a routine everytime I went to a shopping mall for a questionable increase in security. Who would protect me on the sidewalk downtown? What about in a crowded restaurant? If someone hears that “islamo-fascists” are targeting Burger Kings-what then? You see what I mean.

  7. Mike L says:

yeah, and they MAY be planning to blow up bridges around New York. And they MAY be planning to blow up schools around Atlanta. Just what is the point of a ridiculously vague and nebulous “warning” like this anyway?

  8. Katherine says:

I suppose a point, Mike L, may be to make people notice bags without owners in the holiday crowds. And you’re right, Nate, we can’t stop them from blowing up something if they want to. The idea is to prevent big-ticket targets from going up.

  9. Ouroboros says:

All citizens licensed to carry concealed firearms should discreetly do so this holiday season, and be aware of their surroundings and potential threats.

All law-abiding citizens who are not so licensed should consider becoming so.

Just remember, when danger is immediate, the police are just minutes away!

Since 1970, 911 has promised citizens protection in the event of crime. Since 1911, Springfield Armory has been delivering on that promise.

    Ouroboros

If it didn’t cost $50 for the concealed carry permit class, plus the permit fee, I might just consider it. Ever try to do ANYTHING that costs extra outside the budget on a librarian’s income???

  11. Nate says:

#8–I don’t doubt that the intent is to prevent big-ticket items from blowing up–I just doubt that screening jackets & shoes in malls has the actual effect of preventing these things from blowing up.

  12. libraryjim says:

There was an episode of “Criminal Minds” where the terrorists were planning to hit a mall on the day after Thanksgiving – not from inside, but from the Mall ventillation system on the roof using sarin gas. detectors inside the entrances would have been useless. But Gideon & team got the information and thwarted the attempt.

And the ACLU and others of the anti-american left want to dismantle
    the Patriot Act. Go figure.

  15. Alta Californian says:

Hmmm, an FBI warning that al-Qaeda is interested in malls. I’ll go about my business as usual. Ouroboros and others advising the populace to carry concealed weapons this holiday season. That makes me want to stick to Amazon.

  16. DaveG says:

Dick Cheney is to blame. He and Haliburton made Katrina hit New Orleans and he and his puppet President are directing terrorists to ffocus their threats at Chicago and L.A. because those cities are generally Democratic and liberal. Oh, and I forgot, the dog ate my homework.

  17. Cennydd says:

It seems to me that a pound of deterrence is worth a ton of damage control after the fact.

  18. Ouroboros says:

    Alta Californian:

After extensive background checks, training equal to that of a reserve deputy sheriff in my county, and a lifetime of firearms experience, you’ve got nothing to fear from me. In fact, you’d think you’d want law abiding citizens around with the means to defend you if, heaven forbid, some crazy starts attacking people in a public place.
