In North Carolina Residents take noisy church complaints to city council

Kerns said he and other officers had met with the church’s pastor, Demarius Hardy, who had promised to work on soundproofing the church. Hardy, who has not responded to requests by the newspaper for an interview, had already moved the drum set to another part of the church and built a wooden partition around it to reduce the noise.

“This is a church,” said Chief Mike Williams. “However, the bottom line problem is the building itself.” Kerns said, “This building is a metal building with a glass front,” which doesn’t do much to keep the noise of amplifiers and drums inside. He said in his most recent discussion with Hardy, the pastor told him he had $1,000 to use for more soundproofing.

There is music integrated with liturgy and then there is noise accompanying whatever.

I suppose it’s unlikely that they’d consider unaccompanied Gregorian chant for worship.

It’s pretty bad when you have to put up with boom boxes going full blast, and “music” like this is no better. But, I suppose one person’s music is another person’s noise, isn’t it?

Organs and choirs can be pretty loud, too. The point here isn’t the type of music, but rather that they are being inconsiderate neighbors, especially if, as the article states, they are being loud until 11:30 p.m. several days a week.

I have to agree with #5. Setting aside my deep antipathy for modern so called “praise music” which I find to be akin to nails on a chalk board and theologically vacuous at best, this is mostly a case of rude neighbors. They need to cut it out and play Quaker after 9 PM. Ditto for early morning services until they get their building at least semi-soundproofed.

    Amen!
