The Presiding Bishop Visits La Crosse, Wisconsin

“We voted on a number of note worthy things[at General Convention 2012],” Jefferts Schori said. “We passed a trial right for blessing same-sex unions. It will be used on a provisional basis in some dioceses, with the Bishop’s permission only, for three years, and then we will consider something like that again.”

One despairs of the level of general education when one reads articles like this.

It is not “note worthy,” but “noteworthy.” It is not “trial right,” but “trial rite.”

Given that the writer does not seem competent in how to use the English language, why should one be surprised to discover an incorrect identification of KJS as an “archbishop”? TEC has no archbishops.

She believes that she’s in Holy Orders, and like some of her predecessors she carries a metropolitan’s staff, not a bishop’s crozier. For all I know, she told the reporter that she’s an archbishop.

Archbishop Duncan is an archbishop, and he is certainly in Holy Orders. That must bother her.

She also is quoted saying that the SSB ritual that passed GC is a trial rite, but it’s of course only provisional since GC didn’t have the votes to pass it as a trial rite. That reminds me of how the SCOTUS declared that Obamacare is a tax, to the consternation of the Obama administration.

I don’t know if this is prevarication on her part, or inaccurate reporting. I would suspect the former.

Yes, I think a provisional rite needs a label and the PB volunteers a good one: “something like that.”

  4. dwstroudmd+ says:

It most emphatically is NOT a Trial Rite because
    1) it was called provisional to avoid the
    2) failed supermajority of votes to obtain that title.

BUT, any lie told long enough and loud enough will be believed by some,
AND, I will pay dollars to donuts that any number of bishops will parrot this line of the PB’s to avoid TITLE IV charges because “you don’t want the PB to be unhappy or have to face reality” since she’s warned the future that “we’re coming”.

Provisional? Trial? What’s in a word? The bishop has spoken!:

“Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare went on.

“I do,” Alice hastily replied; “at least—at least I mean what I say—that’s the same thing, you know.”

“Not the same thing a bit!” said the Hatter. “Why, you might just as well say that ‘I see what I eat’ is the same thing as ‘I eat what I see’!”

“You might just as well say,” added the March Hare, “that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what I like’!”

“You might just as well say,” added the Dormouse, which seemed to be talking in his sleep, “that ‘I breathe when I sleep’ is the same thing as ‘I sleep when I breathe’!”
