I sang this with my high school chorale back in the 60s. The arrangement made a powerful impact on me then, as it does now. Thanks for posting this, Kendall. Call me a sap, but I am in tears now. I even remember the alto part!!!
I also sang this in HS (in the 1970s). Everybody who has sung in a church choir, or a high school or community chorus has sung it. A real piece of Americana.
In the year marking the centenary of Thompson’s birth, I was at a Labor Day Concert in my hometown in Southern Vermont. After the formal program, the director invited all of those in the audience who had ever sung the Thompson Alleluia up with the chorus. Additional music was passed out. People shared. At least 40% of the audience was up there. And yes, the bass part came back after many many years. I am sure that it still would today.
