The Presiding Bishop inhibits San Joaquin Bishop John-David Schofield

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori on January 11 inhibited Diocese of San Joaquin Bishop John-David Schofield.

In the text of the inhibition, Jefferts Schori wrote: “I hereby inhibit the said Bishop Schofield and order that from and after 5:00 p.m. PST, Friday, January 11, 2008, he cease from exercising the gifts of ordination in the ordained ministry of this Church; and pursuant to Canon IV.15, I order him from and after that time to cease all ‘episcopal, ministerial, and canonical acts, except as relate to the administration of the temporal affairs of the Diocese of San Joaquin,’ until this Inhibition is terminated pursuant to Canon IV.9(2) or superseded by decision of the House of Bishops.”

Jefferts Schori acted after the Title IV Review Committee certified that Schofield had abandoned the communion of the Episcopal Church.

On January 9, Upper South Carolina Bishop Dorsey Henderson, committee chair, wrote to Jefferts Schori, telling her that the nine-member committee had met that day and that a majority agreed that the documentation provided to them “demonstrated that Bishop Schofield has abandoned the communion of this Church by an open renunciation of the Doctrine, Discipline or Worship of this Church.”

  1. Wilfred says:

Because of their “open renunciation of the Doctrine” of the Church, these Inhibitionists should have already inhibited themselves.

  2. Bob from Boone says:

The BP is following procedure. Good for her. The separatist +Schofield has already contemptuously dismissed this action, as the “via email” post above notes.

His forthcoming deposition, which will surely come, will free the Church to follow the canons and seek to recover the property which the Separatists unlawfully and unethically have retained.

  3. Anonymous Layperson says:

Yes, KJS is busily about the new mission of TEC. More inhibitions, more lawsuits, more bad press about conflicts in the church… Truly, the #1 MDG, if judged by actual monetary expenditure, is legal action against conservative Episcopalians.

  4. Kevin Maney+ says:

Well, Bob, #2, at least we know where your priorities are.

Your post illustrates vividly the vast chasm between the gospel on which you focus vs. the gospel of Jesus Christ. Very sad.

  5. PadreWayne says:

    #3: “conservative Episcopalians.”

They are no longer Episcopalians. One could say that the #1 priority of the Anglican Diocese of San Joaquin is to whip parishes and missions (such as Atwater) into the shape of some sort of uniformity of theology and ecclesiology. That sort of uniformity with its intended Curia, is not, IMHO, truly Anglican.

  6. Christopher Johnson says:

#5 Vague Deity Concept forbid that a Christian church no longer allows people to make up the Christian religion as they go along. But it doesn’t much matter what Mrs. Schori does anymore. The Southern Cone Diocese of San Joaquin exists whether TEC approves of its existence or not.

  7. Fred says:

Great news and not a minute too soon! Schofield just can’t have his cake and eat it too……not any more! He may have a hyphenate first name but he can’t have a hyphenate episcopate: TEC-Southern Cone. Not gonna happen. PB Schori ROCKS!!!!!!

  8. Bill McGovern says:

How likely is it that when the HOB meets in March a voice vote will be had; it will be reported to have been approved by acclamation; the Network bishops will report they voted “No”, but no one heard them?

  9. samh says:

And if today the Province of Southern Cone announced it had deposed Schori, Chane or any other Episcopal bishop, the reaction would be what, exactly?

  10. Alice Linsley says:

To laugh out loud, as many of us are doing right now!

  11. Oldman says:

The series of posts today show, as a whole, the sad state of the TEC. Since 2003 and even before with the innovations found in the new BCP, we have seen how deviating from Scripture and Christ’s words leads not only to the loss of souls, but also the destruction of our once beautiful Church.

Bp. Schori and Bishops like Dorsey Henderson have decided, knowingly or not, to follow rough and tumble politics to achieve the “inclusiveness” demanded by the worldly and not the Godly. They can march in the streets and write articles that thrill the press, but introducing humanist politics into the Church ends up in brawls like the one going on between the worldly 815 and the Godly Bishop of the Dio S J.

Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Those wise words are most applicable to Bp. Schori et al for they believe in the humanist message and have forsaken the lessons of Scripture. If they ask God’s forgiveness and return to the true path, they will be saved otherwise they are sad lost souls.

  12. Alice Linsley says:

Bob from Boone, Please look up the meaning of the word “separatist” and you will see that it applies to TEC’s leaders, not to Bishop Schofield, who is in good standing in the Anglican Communion and will be at Lambeth. There is a reason he will be there and VG Robinson won’t.

  13. Susan Russell says:

Hmmm … just back to blogland from a morning that included a wedding and a funeral … what happened to the statement from San Joaquin responding to the Inhibition? Did I just imagine I commented on that earlier today? Elves?????

  14. Bob from Boone says:

#4, how judgmental of you to assume that I do not follow the gospel of Jesus Christ. You must be new to the blog.

Professor Fate has been a member of T19 since October 18, 2006. You joined, using this name, June 4, 2007.

Alice, #12, TEC has not left or been removed from the Anglican Communion. Every statement from HOB and the Executive Council, including the latter’s positive response to the Draft Anglican Covenant, makes clear the leadership’s desire to remain in the AC and help articulate its future self-understanding. I use the term “separatist” much as Fr. Greg at Anglican Centrist and others use it–to describe those Anglicans leaving or planning to leave TEC (e.g. in Fort Worth, Pittsburgh, others) and Anglican provinces who are moving, we believe, toward the creation of an alternative Anglican Communion.

Padre Wayne, I agree with your sentiments.

  15. Kevin Maney+ says:

Bob, #14. Judgmental? Hardly. I simply responded to the content of your post in #2.

  16. Pb says:

My former vestry are being sued individually for moneys spent not in the mission of the church. I wonder whether lawsuits are part of the mission of the church. I guess it depends on who is spending the money.

  17. Choir Stall says:

KJS is like a woman in a burning House screaming that the fire truck siren should pipe down. Bishop Schofield sounded (and sounds the warning). Above his call can be heard the shrill voice of a disturbed and oblivious woman about ready to lose her House.

  18. Tom Roberts says:

14 Will we be checking shoe sizes next to discern the worth of another’s posts?

  19. Nikolaus says:

Hmmm. What does Holy Scripture tell us about discerning works of the Holy Spirit from others? It seems clear to me that the General Convention Church is harvesting bitter fruits from the seeds it has been sowing.

  20. Milton says:

#2 If an action is comtemptible and dismissible then it should be contemptously dismissed!
Bob, whether you follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ found in the WHOLE content of all 4 Gospels (not the unbiblical reduction to the first 2 reduced to mere sentiment) I do not know and will not speculate, but +KJS’s public statements make it unavoidably clear that she does not.

  21. Daniel Lozier says:

We have a Roman Catholic Cardinal in Los Angeles who needs to be inhibited. Since Schori is inclined to inhibit bishops who are not under her authority, I would invite her to inhibit Roger Mahoney….it would carry just as much weight.

  22. Juandeveras says:

Less than 1% of Fortune 500 companies are run by women. The TEC is no different. It is a business, not a church. It is run by David Booth Beers. Schori is a front. It is indeed time for Beers to explain himself and his wife [ she runs Forward Day by Day ] instead of hiding in the shadows.

  23. David Keller says:

Bob From Boone–Re: your comment #2. I am behind the curve on this one, beacuse I was out of town on business, but I couldn’t let this pass. Aldoph Eikman’s defense was that he was just following the procedures. It was a paper shuffle required by the law and confirmed by the proper authorities. Whether one agrees or disagrees with KJS, the notion that following the proper procedures is always a good thing is not a good defense. I personally expect more of my leaders. Unfortunately my “leaders” are Dorsey Henderson and KJS.

  24. Ed the Roman says:

[blockquote]I would invite her to inhibit Roger Mahoney….it would carry just as much weight.[/blockquote]It would be more popular move among conservatives, too. 🙂
