Living Church: Bishops to Focus on Media Relations at Spring Meeting

“With over 100 [TEC] bishops consecrated since the 1998 gathering, it is helpful to offer some historical perspective, as well as consider the practical realities of our time there,” wrote Bishop Jefferts Schori, who was not consecrated Bishop of Nevada until two years after the conclusion of the 1998 conference. “As part of preparing for Lambeth, we will also discuss communications strategies and reflect on how best to work with the media both leading up to and following the conference.”

Bishop Jefferts Schori noted that the bishops will be assisted in their Lambeth preparation by Paula Nesbitt, author of the chapter on “Reflections from Lambeth and Beyond” in the 2001 book, The Future of Religious Pluralism and Social Policy, as well as the yet-to-be-published Cape Town to Canterbury: Organizational Conflicts and Futures for the Anglican Communion in the Twenty-First Century.

I detect an underlying level of concern among the 815 leadership that they aren’t getting their message across in the media in the run-up to Lambeth. This in spite of the reality that TEC shows up in the news in certain media markets (both U.S. and non-U.S.) on a fairly regular basis.

I also wonder if the PB is going to update the HOB on the failed attempt to inhibit +Duncan and not just the +Schofield situation.

[blockquote] The Future of Religious Pluralism [/blockquote] Yep, sounds like a good partner for +Schori.

I guess having Sufis teach classes at the cathedrals hasn’t been enough. Apparently our bishops need lessons in advanced spinning.

100 bishops in <10 years? arent we a little top heavy?

I have a good idea at a PR strategy that should improve TEC’s reputation dramatically. Tie up and gag KJS and David Booth Beers, lock them in a room up in the nether regions of 815, and proceed from there.

Otherwise, KJS needs to realize that the sort of thuggery, intimidation and devil-may-care attitude towards due process that TEC has been operating with recently does not play well in the media, even if that media otherwise agrees with your theological point of view.

People do look at substance not spin. You cannot undo all the negative publicity you have brought on yourself since last summer in the few months since last summer.

You can do something to turn things around but the last week’s events are likely to be seen shortly I would expect in a reaction from the rest of the Communion.

If it is the case that you want to be part of our life as a Communion put the lawyers you have allowed to run this church back in their cage and start to deal with the problems in a Christian fashion – unless that is that you would prefer some new relationship with churches such as the Swedes. Spin will not work.

First para should end in the few months until Lambeth.

100 bishops since 1998 — trying to pack Lambeth 2008? Sure looks like it! How does a province with less than 3% of the Anglicans in the world justify having 1/8th of the bishops of the AC? Talk about wasteful consumption……..

  9. Br_er Rabbit says:

[blockquote] Tie up and gag KJS and David Booth Beers [/blockquote] Alas, JamesW, I fear that would do little good. TEC’s bishops, priests, and laity have chosen their leader and their path, and taking away the leader and the way chosen will simply elevate 7 leaders worse than the original and 7 paths worse than the present one.

The belated disovery that their chosen leader and path make for bad PR will cause not a whit of soul-searching. They will simply try to do the same thing better (or attempt to hide it more). Only a complete transformation miracle from God can save us now.

  10. Chris says:

the problem is not that we’ve consecrated more than 100 Bishops since 1998 (most are due to retirement I reckon), it’s that we have WAY TOO MANY dioceses (all created before 1998).

The Virginia case will have one ruling in the fall, another a year from now. The San Joaquin, Fort Worth, and Pittsburg cases will go on for years. I look forward to more depositions by Katherine Jefferts Schori. Actually, I would love to see her in a live trial with a judge present:

Lawyer: Did you agree with that language when you approved the communique.
KJS: There were some people in the room that understood it that way.
Lawyer: But did you agree with that language when you approved…
KJS: There were some people in the room that understood it that way.
Judge: Bp Schori, if you do not stop avoiding the question, I will toss you in the clink until you learn to answer questions appropriately.

When she tries to circumvent clear canon law to depose Bp Duncan and possibly Bp Iker without inhibition, the “media relations” will be strained, to say the least.

We have had 100 NEW bishops in the last ten years — not 100 MORE bishops. Only diocesan bishops are invited to Lambeth, I think. Of course, these new bishops are more likely to be (theologically) enthralled by Saruman than even those from 1998 (and they were bad enough…)
