LATROBE, PA (JUNE 21, 2014)””””The College of Bishops of the Anglican Church in North America elected today the Rt. Rev. Dr. Foley Beach of the Diocese of the South. Bishop Foley Beach will succeed the Most Rev. Robert Duncan, the first archbishop for the Anglican Church in North America.

“The election occurred Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the College of Bishops three-day conclave where they met in the crypt of the basilica at Saint Vincent Archabbey,” said the Rev. Andrew Gross, Communications Director for the Anglican Church in North America. The new archbishop will serve a five-year term and is eligible for re-election.

“I am delighted by this election and how the College of Bishops, after much deliberation and prayer, came to a unanimous decision,” said Archbishop Robert Duncan. “This is a happy day for the Anglican Church in North America, a happy day for the Anglican Communion, and a happy day for the Christian Church.”

Kendall, Bp. Beach also has a blog
http://bishopfoleybeach.blogspot.com/

ACNA article about the election is here:
http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/page/832

The story quotes Abp. Duncan as saying the election was unanimous. If so, that’s great news.

There seems to also be a brand new twitter feed: ArchbishopFoley

Thanks to Joel at A Living Text blog for posting an interesting article about Abp. Foley.

I especially appreciated his link to an article by Bishop Beach about “what is a bishop” – VERY encouraging!!!

Yes Karen one of the posts linked to above is from Foley Beach’s blog.

People may be interested in the statistics from Saint Alban’s in Monroe, Georgia where Foley was rector (TEC Diocese of Atlanta) starting in 1992 until the TEC crisis escalated beyond the breaking point

Thanks, Karen B.

I too find it encouraging that, in the end, after three long days of deliberation, and several ballots, the decision was unanimous. Although it may be pointing out the obvious, it is interesting and significant that Archbishop-elect Beach illustrates the diversity withn the ACNA and complements ++Duncan by being much more low church than Duncan and by being firmly opposed to WO. However, those things are secondary (at least to me).

A new era is beginning for Anglicanism in North America. Foley Beach is one of the younger bishops in the ACNA, and his election signals that a new generation is taking over the reins. For which I say, Thanks be to God.

A Google search helped me find a short 15 minute Chapel talk by Bp. Beach at Asbury Seminary from last month:

The focus is on the importance of prayer as a cornerstone of ministry and spiritual service – interceding for those the pastor serves.

I’m going to post this at Lent & Beyond.
The following link will take you to Asbury’s page on iTunesU. From there just look for the message title “Chapel” on May 6th.

Such a great message. May we each be praying for Abp. elect Foley as he exhorts the Asbury students to be praying.

His discussion of going on a great adventure of service to the Lord is particularly interesting to hear as he begins a great adventure himself.

I also liked this blog entry by Bp. Beach from GAFCON 2 – it gives short highlights of some of the points that struck him during the bishops’ breakout gathering.

One wishes him and ACNA well. From what I have seen from Dr Harmon’s other article he seems to be a clean slate, though one who has shown considerable courage and mettle in the past. I hope he will be as successful at keeping everyone together, just as Archbishop Duncan has done, even though it has meant considerable forbearance from all traditions for the mutual good and survival.

#6 Karen – Prayer is good and necessary, and that is encouraging. Prayers and congratulations for him and for those he will shepherd.

Bishop Beach sounds like a good choice. May God bless his ministry.

10. David Keller says:

Does anyone know when he will be getting his honorary doctorate from Sewanee ( :

Along with +Bob Duncan being the Commencement Speaker in 2015 and receiving an honorary DD from his alma mater General Seminary 🙂

12. Ralph says:

I don’t see anything about the election at the Sewanee School of Theology website. An oversight, I’m sure, that will soon be corrected.

Congratulations to ACNA!

#12. Give them time, Ralph! Academic institutions are rather slow to update in the summer months as if the whole place goes on vacation! 😉

Kendall,
I hit the link in #4, and here is what came up:
The page cannot be found

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

But, statistics aside, let’s pray for the new Archbishop, and for his future ministry.

This is from some research I did a few years ago on churches leaving TEC:
St. Albans, Monroe: Their priest, Rev. Dr. Foley Beach announced he was leaving TEC and joining Bolivia. The new church, Holy Cross in Loganville, GA has been very successful with 400 active church members in 2007 and built a 20,000 sq. ft place to worship and for
Christian education and administrative needs. St. Albans was hard hit. In 2004, their ASA was 200, membership 550 and plate/pledge was $270,000. The worst year was 2007 but have recovered some. In 2009 ASA and membership was 90 and plate/pledge was $200,000. Rev. Dr. Foley Beach was recently consecrated a bishop in ACNA.

Oh no! No one is as good as the Statmann but thank you for the compliment.
