The Bible Society has released an anotated edition of the Holy Scriptures, highlighting over 2000 passages addressing questions of “social justice.”
Whilst poverty and injustice are “two of the biggest issues of our day,” the president of the Bible Society, the Rt. Rev. NT Wright of Durham said, the new Poverty and Justice Bible, shows that in “speaking out” on these questions, “God got there first.”
The impetus for the Poverty and Justice Bible arose from a comment from American pastor Rick Warren who stated that although he had studied the Scriptures, he had overlooked the passages that spoke of God’s love for the poor.
The new Bible highlights over 2000 passages address social justice issues and comes with a 32 page study guide that looks at issues of fair trade, farming and equality in education.
what wonderful news – this expression of scripture is long overdue
I’ve got a ragged, dog-eared paperbook edited by Ron Sider that does the same thing: Cry Justice: The Bible on Hunger and Poverty jointly published by InterVarsity and Paulist.
BTW, it might be a good time to resurrect the Wittenburg Door’s Sobourner Issue featuring the Red Letter Book of Amos edition — all the social justice verses in red letters!
The CottonPatch for today? I thought the KJV and RSV were pretty clear on the subject for those who read them!

Indeed they are.

Wow kind of a cursory bit of studying there. I wonder if he managed to catch the bit where Jesus dies and rises from the dead before he decided he was qualified to be a pastor.
Just one more reason why I am not enthusiastic over Rick Warren’s programs like “Purpose drivel life”. He may be a good teacher at his own church, but my study of it found it to be superficial. His search for versions of the Bible to support his view (instead of shaping his view from the Bible) was also kind of suspicious to me, especially when one compares the paraphrase version he uses with a translation and finds very little similarity between the verses.
But anyway, is anyone else getting tired of all the ‘niche’ Bibles to be getting out of hand?
