Cherie Wetzel: Lambeth Report #8 Friday morning, July 25, 2008

How is the conference? Worrisome.

How is your indaba group? “Well, the funny thing is,” began one bishop, “The Americans here have this cheat sheet that they use in our group. It has statements on it that justify their decisions in the last two conventions that led to the consecration of Gene Robinson and same-sex marriage. It is a prioritized list of talking points and the one in our group reads off this thing every day.”

It was as if someone dropped a bomb in the room. Was I surprised that my church would utilize a tactic of this nature to persuade the rest of the Communion? No, I was not. Was I surprised that one of those same bishops would bring the document and read from it in a forum such as the Indaba group? No, I was not. Was I surprised by the strong counter reaction of the other bishops in the room, who considered this to be almost treachery? Yes.

Read it all.

They need talking points since scripture, tradition and reason no longer are useful. Hey! You have got to have something.

  2. Jill C. says:

Elves, you’re doing a great job with all this news coming fast and furious. 🙂 Let me put on my school teacher/proofreader hat and point out that it’s Cherie, not Cheria. (See headline of this post.) Thanks!

Thanks for the head’s up. It’s fixed now.

I was struck by the report that some TEC bishops are reading the cheat sheet in the indaba groups repeatedly to influence the outcome of the final statement – sort of like the way a legislator will read a statement into the Congressional Record, or place a comment in a committee report to provide legislative history for judicial interpretation of a statute.

On one hand, it sounds quite childish. On the other hand, it illustrates the lengths TEC will go to in order to manipulate the process.

  4. Larry Morse says:

Its real benefit is that the reader need not worry about thinking for himself, or any other such difficult undertaking. This is called TECnology, and those who read TECnosquibs. Where’s Filch when you need him? ha ha ha ha Larry

  5. Jeffersonian says:

Not particularly surprising, given that the push behind VGR is primarily a political project.

  6. Marion R. says:

ARCHBISHOP WILLIAMS, THIS BEHAVIOR IS WHAT DESTROYED THE ANGLICAN COMMUNION.

ARE THIS BEHAVIOR AND ITS FRUIT REALLY EQUIVALENT TO CHRISTIANITY?

  7. Frank Fuller says:

Come on guys, this is wonderful! They know not what they do, so they have to read a SCRIPT! Rejoice and let the light shine in.

  8. Laura R. says:

Right, Frank! And I do find it too funny that they’re trying to keep TEC bishops in lockstep in order to promote a “celebration of diversity.”

Is this a bishop in TEC whose wishes to embarrass TEC?

Without names it is just gossip.

Unless, of course, you (generic “you”) agree with the anonymous statements, then it’s “See? I told you so!”
