All Good Gifts

[DA VINCI]
We plow the fields and scatter the good seed on the land..
But it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand..
He sends us snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain…
The breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain…

All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above
Then thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love…

[CHORUS]
We thank thee then, O Father, for all things bright and good,
The seedtime and the harvest, our life our health our food,
No gifts have we to offer for all thy love imparts
But that which thou desirest, our humble thankful hearts!

[ALL]
All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above..
Then thank the Lord, thank the Lord for all his love..

I really wanna thank you Lord!
All good gifts around us
Are sent from Heaven above..
Then thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord for all his love..

Saw Godspell for the first time in a long time last night and was struck by the loveliness of this song–KSH

Take a look at hymn #291 in The 1982 Hymnal. I didn’t know this until long after I had seen Godspell. Yes, a lovely song.

You put me back almost 30 years! Almost all of the songs are from the Episcopal Hymnal and most are nicely re-set, although this is the nicest.

Our daughters just finished a production of Godspell with Christian Youth Theater that was truly amazing. Even more amazing was how the cast raised money to purchase New Testaments to hand out free to those who wanted them.

Wonderful music when the message is not compromised.

When I saw GODSPEL at a local community theater quite a few years back, the cast, most of whom were Christian, staged the ‘encore’ to portray the Resurrection! It worked very well, since the original does not include it.

Always a favorite at the Thanksgiving service.

I was part of the cast of ‘Godspell’ my sophomore year of high school. Its telling of several of the parables from Matthew was really my first exposure to the Gospel.. and the music was, well, magic. The following summer I did “Jesus Christ Superstar” which was HUGE for me spiritually as well. Some 20 years later, these experiences have served to remind me that, indeed, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached, and in this I greatly rejoice.

Our local community theatre (which I must say operates almost like a regional professional theatre, but none of the actors/crew get paid) produced Godspell as a youth production last summer. I had seen it a couple of times years ago when I was a teen. I was raised in the church, so I enjoyed it even as a kid. But, boy, did I appreciate it so much better watching a very, very talented group of 15-21 year olds performing it! Unlike #4 above, they did not re-stage the finale to include the resurrection. Instead, they used lighting and the curtain call to indicate it. It was actually quite amazing. And the young man who play Jesus, while being one of the oldest cast members at 21, had the perfect paradoxical combination of purity and wisdom. I was in tears several times throughout the show. When it`s done correctly (i.e., not obscuring or diluting the message), it is a wonder indeed. Thank you, Dr. Harmon, for bringing back some not old yet tucked away memories!

`You are the light of the world! You are the light of the world! But if that light`s under a bushel it`s lost something kind of crucial. You got to stay bright to be the light of the world!`

I didn’t say they re-staged it to include the resurrection, I said they staged the ‘encore’ to portray the Resurrection! a bit of a difference.
