ENS–Presiding Bishop inhibits Fort Worth bishop

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori on November 21 inhibited Diocese of Fort Worth Bishop Jack Iker for abandoning the communion of the Episcopal Church.

In the text of the inhibition, the Presiding Bishop wrote that “I hereby inhibit the said Bishop Iker and order that from and after 5:00 CST Friday, November 21, 2008, he cease from exercising the gifts of the ordained ministry of this Church; and pursuant to Canon IV.15, I order him from and after that time to cease all ‘Episcopal, ministerial, and canonical acts, except as relate to the administration of the temporal affairs of the Diocese of Fort Worth,’ until this Inhibition is terminated pursuant to Canon IV.9(2) or superseded by decision of the House of Bishops.”

Jefferts Schori acted the day after the Title IV Review Committee certified that Iker had abandoned the communion of the Episcopal Church.

We’re getting to the point where if the Presiding Bishop doesn’t inhibit you, you have to wonder if you are doing something wrong.

The PB’s inhibition is the imprimatur of orthodoxy.

  2. Janet says:

Another example of someone in odd vestments acting as if their personal sin and silliness were somehow revelant to the Church!

  3. A Senior Priest says:

    Sound and fury signifying… nothing.

  4. Cennydd says:

Bishop Iker’s name is now on the Honors List.

  5. Cennydd says:

And another thing: Besides being a would-be bishop, Dr. Schori is now a would-be lawyer, so I wonder if she could be charged with practicing law without a license? Wishful thinking, of course!

  6. RoyIII says:

She’s 3 years and a bar exam away! Maybe hanging around Beers helps – they used to let you “read” law.

  7. Stuart Smith says:

Bishop Iker’s words to the convention regarding those who differ seem an appropriate response…even to this abusive misuse of the Canons by the PB: “The LORD watch between thee and me until we meet again.” If you ask me whose conscience should sit lighter in the aftermath of all this inhibiting/deposing…I would NOT say Dr. Schori & DBB!

What exactly (please, really) are the penalties for any Episcopalian under the sun doing a eucharist in his/her living room? Or in a chuirch? Of all the stupid things for KJS to pronounce. Any Episcopalian can do anything they want. Without exception. Any debate on this point?

Another dumb move. When will this BP learn you cannot control conscience.
