Nominees for Bishop of Nevada

During their day-long meeting at St. Paul’s Church, Sparks, the Diocesan Standing Committee received a report from the Bishop Search Committee in which 5 priests were commended for nomination to our October 12 Diocesan Convention in Las Vegas. At the same time, Standing Committee declared the Petition Process open until August 1 for additional nominations. Procedures for nomination by Petition provide for a process in lieu of nomination from the floor of Convention because of the lack of time for required background checks for floor nominations.

The 5 Nominees from the Bishop Search Committee are presented below for consideration by all the members of the Diocese of Nevada….

I think we should place bets on this one. 🙂

2. Chazaq says:

I place my bet on the one whose writeup mentions Jesus.

3. Chip Johnson, cj says:

Chazaq,

That is highly immaterial criteria. This is for TEC/NV, don’t forget

4. David Fischler says:

My money is on the guy wearing his wife’s hat.

5. VaAnglican says:

William F. Buckley once said that the description of Michael Harrington as America’s “foremost socialist” was akin to a building’s having the distinction of being “the tallest building in Topeka, Kansas.” For some reason the contest to be bishop of the Diocese of Nevada reminded me of this quip. (Although it’s not fair at all to Topeka.)

6. faithful bill says:

I love the womans hat. I really like the way they go all out to metion Gays. and diversity etc. shouldn’t they be looking for someone who truly floows the teachings of the bible.

7. Anglicanum says:

Wow, that hat. That’s really … something. Isn’t it.

8. robroy says:

Two of the five are lawyers. My bet is on one of them, qualified to carry on Christian, no make that Episcopal mission (there’s a big difference, of course).

9. David Keller says:

Well, give them credit. They apparently have avoided nominating a gay or lesbian. That being said, #5 thanks for apologizing to Topeka; and #8 since the outreach of TEC appears to be reaching out and touching someone with a lawsuit, you are probably correct. I don’t know whether to luagh or cry anymore.

And that mission being able to more effectively sue conservative parishes leaving the diocese.

#2- lol. You were having fun with us, weren’t you? I did a word search on the bio webpage. There are zero mentions of Jesus. “Christ” comes up twice- because one of the candidates was rector of a “Christ Church”.

12. Anglican Paplist says:

Hmm. there are almost as many candidates as there are Episcopalians in Nevada. If the hat can swing two votes he should be in.

13. Bull Street says:

What WAS he thinking?!?

On the other hand, Nevada is solar-wicked. Maybe he has a dome like mine and needs protection. He’s showing self-care.

14. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

3 lawyers, 1 triathlon compeditor and a member of the Committee for Gay and Lesbian Ministries. No oceanographers.

[You can never have enough lawyers.]

15. Words Matter says:

Did I miss something, or are all of them ordained in second careers? Unless I missed something, it’s 3 lawyers, a social worker, and an advertising man. Is that a trend?

16. libraryjim says:

What a hat. I bought my wife one like that only it had a pink floral band. and for a minute there I thought The Rev. Dr. C. Eric Funston suffered from a bad case of dandriff until I noticed a) he’s almost bald and b) it’s a tweed coat. %-P

17. Rob Eaton+ says:

Looks like Eric Funston will end up being the ‘home boy” in the election. Also, I found his brand new blog at http://rectorsreflections.blogspot.com

18. Rev Dr Mom says:

Do you all have nothing better to do than pick on a straw hat? Sheesh.

19. art+ says:

Rev. Burns says attendance at Redeemer has doubled since she cam there in 94. according to National church stats attendance has gone from about 90 to 120. My math isn’t that bad to know this isn’t double.

20. Anglicanum says:

No. I have nothing better to do than pick on a straw hat.

Literally.

21. Cindy T. in TX says:

These bios don’t describe any of the candidates as actually being Christian, meaning, that they have a relationship with the Lord, or as having any interest in spreading the Gospel. Or even, of leading the church… They do seem very interested in moving on in their journeys….

But they’d all make great CEOs, and I’m sure any of them would devote the rest of their ministry lives to pushing the MDGs over the top.

I weep for the Church.

22. libraryjim says:

But I thought it was a straw poll!

23. Tikvah says:

No no, libraryjim, that’s a straw hat! 😉

24. Dick Mitchell says:

It does appear that all five nominees currently serve as parish rectors in TEC — which is a distinction I do not believe that the previous Bishop of Nevada ever shared.

25. stjohnsrector says:

I looked at all the parish reports.
The largest (NY) has attendance of 175 or so as well as the parish in Georgia (actual upward growth there).
NJ parish has seen attendance recently decrease from 120 to 100.
OH seems to also have lost attendance recently, down to just above 100 or so.
Hardly an slate of church builders.
And notice how many of the parish websites imply open communion – inviting all regardless of whether they are baptized.

26. APB says:

All that is missing is Flip Wilson’s Reverend Leroy, the Pastor of the Church of What’s Happening Now.

27. robroy says:

To stjohnsrector: The unimpressive non-growth from the candidate list means they might follow in KJS’s footsteps. In her tenure of bishop of Nevada, the denomination’s attendance shrank be 10%. This is remarkable because Nevada has been the population growth leader in the US for many years now. There was a discussion of the performance on the TEC’s official blog that the church’s own statistician looked at the placing KJS dead last in 99 dioceses for population growth adjusted statistics. There was some equivocation but he did not disagree with the assessment.

28. Br_er Rabbit says:

Hey! That’s MY hat! The hatband he added looks terrible.

29. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

I have no idea whether the good Rev’d is follically challenged or not but the hat looks very nice and cool for the Georgia sun.

30. loonpond says:

Where can I get informed opinion on Godly Play – the Sunday School Curriculum that TEC pushes so heavily? The last nominee mentions using GP as well as J2A as evidence of his involvement with Christian Formation. How good or bad a program is GP? Any comments, please?

31. Cousin Vinnie says:

Hey, give the hat guy a break. He already threw his regular hat (probably a Cummins Diesel ball cap) in the ring, and this is what he had left.

32. stjohnsrector says:

I recently had a photo published in the Detroit Free Press – straw hat and all…..
http://cmsimg.freep.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?Site=C4&Date=20070719&Category=NEWS06&ArtNo=707190348&Ref=AR

33. Anglican Paplist says:

I have used Godly Play for quite awhile and find it a wonderful way to tell the stories of the Bible. We only use it for our pre-K and K children. In the next class we use my personal favorite, flannel graph story telling. Nothing but the Bible told in a way that is engaging and, dare I say it, fun.

34. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

#32 Very smart – a Panama always looks good – a dapper divine.

35. SorianoS says:

Wow. What a sad bunch of people–worried about a person’s former profession or their attire. Or best of all, so concerned about having “Jesus” mentioned (guess God’s not good enough…) and all the while violating one of Jesus’ own commandments: Love thy neighbor as thyself. I wonder what Jesus would have to say about some of these comments? Would you read them aloud to him with pride?

I too weep for the church.

36. Pageantmaster Ù† says:

Might that be a little judgemental do you think, SorianoS? – and one can only wish the good bishop well in his new calling.

37. SorianoS says:

Might those above comments be a little hypocritical, Pageantmaster? Simply standing firm in my faith.

All my prayers and best wishes for the bishop elect, the people of Nevada.
