A Fantastic Rick Reilly Story About a Highly Unusual Football Game in Texas

They played the oddest game in high school football history last month down in Grapevine, Texas.

It was Grapevine Faith vs. Gainesville State School and everything about it was upside down. For instance, when Gainesville came out to take the field, the Faith fans made a 40-yard spirit line for them to run through.

Did you hear that? The other team’s fans?….

“I never in my life thought I’d hear people cheering for us to hit their kids,” recalls Gainesville’s QB and middle linebacker, Isaiah. “I wouldn’t expect another parent to tell somebody to hit their kids. But they wanted us to!”

Makes the heart very glad–read it all (Hat tip: TCW).

What a great story. All it takes is some spirit-filled initiative. Which I lack almost all the time.

What a great story! What a big-hearted coach, team, and fans. It is amazing how little it takes to give people some dignity and pride, but what a return for the effort! Being from the South we know that God loves football, but I’ve gotta think He was paying close attention to that game and to those folks that night. My favorite part of the story is they had this so well-thought-out that they even gave those young men a meal for the bus ride back. Everyone won that night, I think!

Having served as Youth and Family Minister at St. Laurence – Grapevine, I can say that Faith Christian is a positively exceptional school. Youth at our parish who went there were kids with hearts of gold – kids built for the Kingdom of God. This story doesn’t surprise me in the least!
