#2… remember though, the question was not “How many people in each country has completely uncensored access to to any internet site they wish?”
It was just asking how many people are using the internet to some extent, regardless of whether their content is perhaps restricted.
Given that China has like a gazillion more people in base population than the US (gazillion is a scientific term), the question is a slam dunk for China.
Interestingly, some countries in the West are proposing levels of internet censorship that rival China’s. Britain’s govt is hoping to work closely with Obama to make it very hard to access a lot of sites they perceive as dangerous for children. My guess is that this will be a failure, due to distributed and global nature of the net, and probably has more to do with people positioning themselves politically as “defenders of children” (good for careers) — but it won’t stop them from trying I suppose. Kendall had an article about this a while back, if I remember right.
I did correctly guess China, thanks to previous reports in the Los Angeles Times. However, we are told that many have been prosecuted and imprisoned for posting and accessing matter offensive to the ruling gangsters.
Not surprised that China has the most Internet users. It has the world’s largest population after all. That doesn’t mean that they can freely browse the Internet with no restrictions, however.
China? Or is it India?
Wow, I never would have guessed, given all the stories about the restrictions on internet access in that country.
