Baby boomlet: US births in 2007 break 1950s record

A record-setting number of babies were born in the United States in 2007, and it may prove to be just another reminder of prosperity lost.

In good times, we reproduce. In bad times, we don’t.

Health officials on Wednesday released a statistical snapshot of the good times: Births in this country topped 4.3 million in 2007, more than any other year in the nation’s history, surpassing the peak during the post-World War II baby boom 50 years earlier.

Many of those babies were conceived in 2006, when the economy was relatively good. A nation’s birth rate tends to rise in times of prosperity, according to experts.

The sad part is that these births are not to families but single women.

This is becoming common and accepted. Sadly, it takes a mother and father and children to make a family and the children and society will suffer as morality declines….

    Lord have mercy

I read somewhere yesterday that the number of out-of-wedlock babies is now around 40% – Lord have mercy indeed.

Will there be enough to pay for the budget deficit?

The young woman had a baby boy in December, and plans for a wedding with the father, Levi Johnston, were scrapped.

The article does mention the 40% illegitimacy rate. The Palin case really is a bellwether case, because it shows the extent to which even the conservatives have gone soft on the issue. At least Dr. Laura is still out there raising hell on the issue.

How many are “anchor” babies of hispanic illegal alien mothers here for the benefits to be derived therefrom ? This is a cottage industry along the Rio Grande and our southern border.

These data need a bit of focus. In 1950 the USA population was about 160 million whereas in 2007 the USA population was well above 300 million. So, the birthrate is no where near 1950 even with the Hispanic contribution. (Also, the birthrate in Mexico is falling.) Our population increase is the result of immigration, not a high birthrate.
