Notable and Quotable

“We’re just sitting here all day long looking for jobs on the computer, frustrated and scared as hell…I’m looking for anything.”

Henry Pevez of New Jersey in a front page story from today’s New York Times about yesterday’s unemployment report

Yeah, that sentence mirrors my own job search since October.

Almost every place I contact, the response is the same:
Our application is online at our website under “careers”. If we have ANY openings they will be posted there as well. Then if you fill out the application for the job, we will contact you.

the implication is: don’t call us, we’ll call you. The era of personal contact leading to a job is a thing of the past.

The good news is that I have an interview on Wednesday, in South Florida. I also have had a very promising interview for a position in town last week, and am waiting for a ‘call back’ for the 2nd interview. The problem: going down to S. Fl. puts me a bit out of contact with in-town job, since I didn’t give them my cell phone number (it’s always turned off! Too expensive to use except for emergencies).
